Plumbing A Brick Column
I have a customer that has a brick fence. I am tearing down the fence between the brick columns and putting up a decorative wood fence in its place.
One of the columns is leaning due to a tree root that grew under it. I have not looked at the columns up close yet so I do not know if there is a footing under them. The tree has been removed and I need to get this column plumb again. I am planning on digging out around the column, plumbing it and pouring a new footing under it. Any advice or suggestions?

Re: Plumbing A Brick Column
I suppose it is worth a try. Everytime I try something like what you described I end up building a new one.
![]() How do you intend to support the post as you pour the new footer? If the total height of the post drops a couple of inches, will it be obvious to a casual observer? I would porbably warn the customer that a new post may be necessary if something happens. Not sure this is any help, but ...

Re: Plumbing A Brick ColumnQuote:
The column heights vary already as this fence is probably 50 years old and some seem to have settled a bit. I had envisioned supporting the column with 2x4 braces but I do not know how realistic that would be. I do not have any experience with this type of situation and I may call a mason to sub this out but I would like to get a few ideas here first. Thanks

Re: Plumbing A Brick Column
i agree that your best bet would be tear it down and replace it.
