Pizza Oven Dome Construction

Carl..I figured it would be easier to start a new thread. I tried to put them in order starting with the slab for the oven. I have base pictures but resizing is a pain but if anyone wants to see them I`ll post some. Questions welcome!

Nice.

Just FYI, you don't have to resize them--the forum software will do that for you.

Thanks! The way the oven was finished was not even close to what was originally planned. We decided to sell the house before I started to do the finish work so I chose a more economical route.

The original plan was tight fitted native fieldstone, like adirondack style with varied size. The roof was going to be copper with copper drip edge. I was going to make a forged door for the oven and barn board doors with forged strap hinges for the wood box. I am still very pleased with the final result and have to thank two good friends that did the roof and the shakes.

Re: Pizza Oven Dome Construction

Did you use refractory for the joints? If you did how bad was the shrinking? some of those joiunts look well over .5" I figured you would get some.

Yes, refractory was used on the dome. There was no shrink cracking after it dried. The joints on the back of the brick where about 3/4" and what you cant see is a small wedge of firebrick . I had a bunch of the left from cutting so I put them to use this way. There would have been quite a bit more cutting if I had cut the bricks with taper and this design was a tried and true method. My neighbor at that house builds masonry heaters for a living so I had him inspect it and he told me no problem. Expansion cracks during firing are normal and close up after the oven cooled...these never opened greater than 1/16".

Around Here you can get a large pizza from a drive up window for $5!

Looks sweet though! Nice work.
