Outdoor Stair Lighting
A neighbour of mine is looking for ideas to light these stairs he's building. He's thinking of something in the risers perhaps or maybe imbedded in the walls (mostly built already on one side.) Any thoughts anyone?

Re: Outdoor Stair Lighting
Are those walls going to be exposed to the elements? If so, they won't last long. That is a very nice stone, but the walls need some work. They should be tilted into the dirt they are retaining, and should have some batter. Some non-woven filter fabric behind them would also help. As for the lighting, the risers don't appear to be poured, so they could certainly be installed there, or into the side not yet built.
Remember that every stone has it's place, and just because it can be balanced into a spot does not mean that that is it's place. |

Look into the marine lighting, lots to choose from. LED's have been hot for about the last 5 yrs. LV and long life are +'s.

Re: Outdoor Stair Lighting
Thanks TS, masonry is not really my thing, I love to learn from you guys, but would not do it for anyone but myself. The wall in the pictures is outside, and the stone is mortared in place at the back. Does that make sense?
What he's interested in is products (lighting) that can be installed either in the wall that is not yet complete, or in the risers when they go in. Are there specific manufacturers of this that you could point me to?

Maybe some step lights?
User NightscapePaul should have some good ideas. I think he's in the landscaping forum area someplace. This is his trade.

Re: Outdoor Stair Lighting
Mdshunk has the right idea here. I would mount fixtures either into or onto the retaining walls on either side of the steps. This gives much better coverage of the steps and also minimizes glare. There are many types of surface mounted fixtures and there are some fixtures that can be set into the wall. Since the walls are already in, I would go with the surface mounted fixtures. These would be "deck" lights that would mount onto the rock. Drill a 1/4" hole through the rock for the wire and make the connections in the flower bed behind the wall.
I would recommend using a quality manufacture like Kichler, Hadco, Vista, or if you want to go real high, Hunza. You can get these products from your local irrigation supply house or lighting showroom. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance to you.
