Na, I Still Got It...

Cleaning, sealing and stainless...

I re-did this patio and front stoop here back in June and now I'm back to clean and seal the front river stone wall and two rear wall chimneys.

I'll be replacing the big topper on the tall one with a properly fitted stainless knock down multi flue cover and replacing the galvanized chase cover on the lower one with a new stainless version. Couple of other things to do as well...I'll keep you posted.

Re: Na, I Still Got It...

If you think those stone exposures appear clean, think again...the front wall was full of green algae haze and mildew and the rear chimneys mainly just mildewed and atmospheric dirt.

The big culprit not really too visible in some of the photos are iron oxide stains...some of these stones contain iron in too much concentration and over the course of 20 years, leached out and severely stained some mortar joints making for a rather unsightly appearance.

Any of you guys that know removing rust stains is tough work know what I'm talking about...even 600 detergent with every fan tip including zero degree, wouldn't even touch it. I ended up using a environmentally safe, proprietary, non phosphate, non acidic cleaner with up to 10 applications and tons of elbow grease using brass and stainless steel wire brushes.

There were approx. 10 major spots of concern throughout the project and quite frankly, I didn't think i was going to get it off...the final results however, quite spectacular! Additionally, I soft washed all the Hardie siding, trim, and composite garage doors along with pressure washing the Englert LeafGaurd system on the entire house and finally the front blue-stone walkway which was heavily mildewed and slippery as death.

Next up is epoxy injection to several stones on the big chimney and spot pointing to correct some hairline cracks and holes...anything worthy of letting water in.

All the chimney hardware is ordered and should be in early next week.

some more...Houses in wooded areas such as this attract some serious friggin' dirt I tell ya.

Owner popped in on me and was absolutely delighted with the results...nothing less for this lifelong customer I told him.

That half and half picture of the upper portion of the chimney is incredible. So satisfying.

Re: Na, I Still Got It...

So next week is here already and it was a brisk, chilly start to a Monday morning. On the docket today is spot pointing all stonework on the front wall and both chimneys...nothing too major, but certainly lots of divots and holes in the wear and tear areas and even a few hairline shrinkage cracks to some of the stone perimeters.

I whipped up a stiff mix of 3 to 1 yellow bar sand to one white portland and slicked over any hot spots capable of allowing excess water entry into the veneer. It's imperative it's done before the waterproofing as you'll be unable to bond correctly to freshly sealed surfaces.

The weapon of choice for blending into the original is of course the right mix and my trusty summer penguins which will take days and days of abuse without wearing holes in the fingers...one of the best gloves IMO for this procedure. If you decide to use a bare finger...so be it, by lunch you'll have a tiny hole that hurts like a gunshot wound

I also ripped off the big topper stainless cap on the big chimney because tomorrow I'll be setting flue extensions and re-doing the crown prior to mounting the new cover.

Anyone know why I get random flipped pics when using my Iphone? It never happens with my canon 570.

Do you hold your phone different ways when taking the pictures? If so sometimes it uploads that way even if it looks normal on your phone

Re: Na, I Still Got It...

The old stainless cover is gone, the crown pressure washed and I'm adding flue extensions so I can mud over this crown with a fiber reinforced, acrylic modified super mud.

Looks like Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow today...that's a sign of an early Spring!

Re: Na, I Still Got It...

Figured I'd get the winds today as I apply sealer to the chimneys...Damn sun was supposed to come out to dry out last nights rain, but it was short lived...clouds and increasingly chilly, windy weather ruled the day so overspray protection was a prerequisite.

A cool little dragonfly was warming up on my crown early this morning...

Right you are...and it was the painters plastic type which truly sailed in the winds until I stuck it with stucco tape. I used yellow delicate frog tape when I came upon painted surfaces and the stucco tape for PVC boards. A lot of Fypon on the front windows surrounds also received frog tape...no failures anywhere with the bonding of both tapes and both stripped cleanly.

I did the front wall and front walk today, also installed a miter drain which daylights the rear addition footer drain to the side of the house...owner wanted me to mark it with rocks for the "lawnmower dudes"

Friggin' beautiful out today, little wind and warmer temps even though I was in the shade most of the day.

Cont...When you saturate the surface you're waterproofing, it's difficult to stop the flow down onto roof shingles and for some reason this sealer will permanently stain the shingles a darker shade. I'm trying out some new absorbents and they're working out well

I'm not so sure I like the rocks

Re: Na, I Still Got It...

A shout out to Rich at Olympia in Scranton, PA for fabbing up my stainless hardware needed for this job. A quick call with measurements of anything I can conjure up is usually produced and shipped to the job within days.

The multi flue cover has hinged flanges on the bottom so you can mount it to the interior or exterior of the screen depending on how one sizes it and hinged corners...all 304 stainless. The lid is mounted on welded stainless studs with simple wingnuts.

I recommend my customers size them to the exterior perimeter of the crown and then have the lid sized 5" larger so we get a 2 1/2" drip all the way around.
