Mason Tools
Hey all, I'm a woodworker, have a question for ya though, bought some tools in bulk at a local auction and got quite a few concrete/bricklaying hand tools in the mix, one thing I got was a wheeled joint raker, I honestly have no idea what's it's for. Bit of knowledge thrown my way is much appreciated.

Re: Mason Tools
Called a roller skate in my area. Should have a nail sticking through where the head of the nail is used to rake a joint out and give a nice recessed finish.

Re: Mason Tools
What type of answer is that? You should have advised him to wear a helmet and knee and elbow protection before skating.

Re: Mason Tools
called a scratcher here in oklahoma.altho i have heard a few call it a roller skate.
i hate them.the nail is always to big for the joint or to thin.the set screw always loosens up making you have to reset the nail and go over your work again.i would rather use a texas raker.

Re: Mason Tools
there were two in the lot so maybe I'll give the roller skating a try. Seriosuly though, the nail is only an 1/8 inch wide, could you give me an example of an application where it would work, I'm wondering where people use an 1/8 inch joint

Re: Mason Tools
You use the head end to rake, not the pointy end. It should be a fluted concrete nail, too.

Re: Mason Tools
And that is a good thing. A raked joint is the absolute worst way to tool a wall.
It does not conslidate the mortar, just the opposite. It provides ample areas for moisture and ice accumulation. It is a PITA unless your joints are perfect.
