Mail Box Ideas Round 2
Hello,
About a year ago I reached out to you guys looking for ideas for a masonry mailbox. http://www.contractortalk.com/showth...hlight=Mailbox As you can see the thread didn't go so well, and as such my mailbox still isn't done...in fact it's not even started. I tell my wife that the reason I have not started is that my online masonry buddies just couldn't come up with a great idea. Well since the first query quite a few new guys have joined and so I will put out the plea again halfway hoping that nobody has any great ideas, so that I can delay it another year. My best thought so far is to modify this buttress scanned from the peter cartwright book called "Bricklaying" (good book by the way) ![]() What do you think? I have to ask because I no longer trust my aesthetic judgement after our water tower discussion a few months ago. http://www.contractortalk.com/showth...r+tower&page=2 I'm also open to stone ideas as well.

Re: Mail Box Ideas Round 2
I just built myself a brick mailbox 2 weeks ago. Much faster than stone. I'll post a pic of it later today when I get home from working. I will advise that if you are going to do anything complicated, draw it out as completely as possible. I made some spur of the moment design decisions that didn't work out perfectly.

Re: Mail Box Ideas Round 2
Luka, I built a nice one for my house. It starts out like this,2'x2' with 3 brick stack bond on the sides with the middle brick setting in 1/2".On the front I pot a headder next to the heads of the side bricks on the front and back sides, then I layed a stretcher in the middle alo setting back 1/2".That same lay out carries up stack bond style with cinder block infill. At about 40" all the 1/2" insets come back ouy flush with the rest of the brick. Then I screw a pt 2x6 to the bottom of a new plastic mailbox (remove the flag and attach to the side of the finished brickwork later).Run 3 1/2" ss screws into the bottom of the pt board and mud the mailbox in place with just the door + 1/4" stecking out from the face of brickwork. Now comes the good part, you will now do a double barrel arch over th mailbox. This is tricky as you are turning 2 different arches. you will need a masonry saw for this step as you will need to cut pie shaped brick to turn the barrel. It looks great ,I'll take a
oicture of it and post it. Good luck |

Re: Mail Box Ideas Round 2
Yeah, unfortunately it is nothing more than an avatar. I put it up while participating in a thread where everyone was bragging about all the great things they have done but "don't want to brag about". I tried to think of the most outlandish thing I could think of that was halfway believable to prove that here on this internet it is quite easy just to make stuff up. The truth is I don't even hunt.
http://www.contractortalk.com/showth...t=19340&page=2 I just never removed the avatar.

Re: Mail Box Ideas Round 2
Here you go. I messed up the bond because I had 2 different ideas and tried to put them together without drawing it out. Also, it was a really bad idea to do it in flemish bond as I'm not a bricklayer. It was a struggle.

Re: Mail Box Ideas Round 2
Way to go artisanstone I like your mailbox. You are thinking outside of the (mail) box on that one which is always good. How did you get your nice gothic shape? By eye or did you build a template. Now we are just waiting for MM's mb.
I'm starting to feel inspired.

Re: Mail Box Ideas Round 2
Very Nice mb's both of you. Great craftsmanship from what I can see. I do have to say that this thread is working out a lot better this year than last year. Thanks for the participation.
Anyone else have a masonry mailbox to throw into the fray? BBL Your neighbors must be jealous as you have seriously outclassed them now. It is a very nice mailbox design. The bar has been set very very high! What is the shelf in the front for? Your daily roast turkey? The Milkman? Pure Aesthetics? MM i like the insets in your mb. It is a good example of how a little detail can make a big difference.
