You'll all be happy I'm not working heights on this one ...

Neighbor has been at me to install his new patio door since October 2011 and I'm finally finding time on the schedule to get it done.

Basically need a 6'0" x 6'8" opening created through a solid masonry house to accommodate the install.

Got a late start this morning and the 60 mph gusts we had today made for an interesting dust storm

Anyway, I'll keep you updated with the lintel installation and such as I progress through this.

On the docket today...Layout; removal of 2 sheets of heavily glued
80's interior paneling to expose the furred out drywall; saw-cut perimeter; primed up two lintels and started brick removal.

It's does flash set...Your brushing and smoothing out your work about every 4. sq. ft. give or take the weather. The trick is to break another golden rule which is re-tempering.

Make your batch up prior use and let it set up a bit -come back and re-temp to a creamy consistency and keep it going through regular re-tempering with a water bottle.

your simply creating a pre-hydrated mix which will last up to four hours or so and is rock hard in about an hour after it's applied.

I know some of you must be slinkying in you seats hearing this and your probably not going to find this in any institutional publications :whistling but trust me, it does work in many applications and works quite well.

I'll get some close up pics of the house next door done 25 years ago...

Final brush with some horsehair and she's good to go. Rain ready in about a hour

Juiced up the crown with some cream cheese and fiber - good for the diet up here ;)

Can't wait to do this liner - should be an easy one

Actually Dom, some of the houses are done in federal white and do come out light. Most choose Portland (type1) which cures out gray tone and ages into sand tone eventually.

Here's that house next door I mentioned to Stone, which after confirmation was done 26 years ago while moonlighting from my employer at the time...dang, I was only a young 20 yo buck at the time

Now on the contrary...when I'm saw-cutting and applying in deeper layers, I always change up the mix to match the existing strength close as possible. Generally speaking a 6:1:1 mix is what's specified and normally works out very well.

Bare in mind I'm talking original Portland mixes - lime mortars as we know are a different beast altogether.

Hey fellas',...did I show you my new demo tool I finally decided on :whistling Posted them up in the carpentry section in my Hurd thread but figured my masonry buddies might wanna see too.

Been wanting one for awhile now and squirreled a few nuts away in the meantime.

Finally found what I was looking for so finally pulled the trigger - no pun intended

You should see it remove mortar @ 100 yards.

DakZaag thinks I can remove wood rot with it too ;)

You know I'm gonna have some fun with this

Boots still look good Stone

Yea Tom, I see what you mean now...That brick joint on the stuck work is quite large however. It's harder to get a smooth transition into the head with the thick joints as opposed to true 3/8" work.

Kinda hard to explain but the larger the joint - the more of an eyesore.
Brick absorption rates and brick uniformity play a large roll also.

You can really cruise on nice uniform brickwork using this technique,...even if it ain't real brick sometimes

As a patriot, I truly appreciate your services fellas

Takes a lot of courage and determination to tackle those accomplishments and your a better man for it!...Thank you!

Me, on the other hand, played hooky a half day today and snuck out to the range were there's not much of a chance for hostile fire in our direction.

Once again, the nephew and bro-in law participated and we had a blast. Ideally, I was hoping to sight it the new demo tool and with a little help, I think we got it.

Let the nephew christen it and he loved the 2 stage, 4lb, RRA match trigger... that thing is sweet let me tell ya. The EOTech holographic sight was like the whip cream on top.

Anyway, no marksman I am but I try once in awhile. Put about 100 rounds through and it seemed like I was getting closer anyway

Maybe next time out I'll get a clean bullseye ;)

No laughing JD or I'll put a whooping on ya
