Lead Counter Flashing

hello. i am new to the forum and i need some help. i used to work for a brick/stone mason for about 3 years and i decided to go off on my own (doing mostly stone veneer and walls). i am in the process of building a block chimney in my house and i have a question about the lead counter flashing (on the sides of the chimney). the mason i used to work for would cut the lead at an angle at the roof line...but i have seen some chimneys where the lead bends at the roof line and overlaps onto the shingles...i have even seen some where the lead was tucked under the shingles...my question is what is the best/correct way to "end" the lead counter flashing...cut before the roof, or overlap onto the roof? thanks you...

Re: Lead Counter Flashing

Counter flashing is better than a single piece that goes from the masonry all the way to under the shingles. IMO. It allows for movement of the house around the chimney w/o disturbing the flashing. So use a lower pan flashing, then step up the sides, then top pan, then come back and counter flash into the masonry.

Re: Lead Counter Flashing

I wish folks still used lead counter around here. Bends enough to let a guy do a proper flashing job on a re-roof.

Re: Lead Counter Flashing

Angle the lead to the pitch of the roof. Let the roofing material step flashings do what they where designed to do.
