Re: Just Started

Go and look for every post by me lol. That will tell you.

Just kidding. I've been in business 2yrs now in about a month and I still dont have full time work. I make enough to pay the bills. But the only reason we have extra money is because the wife has a good job. She did get to go to part time though.

And as far as learning the business Im not sure if you mean masonry or the business aspect of it. Either way if you dont know anything about either you might be in for a bit of a rough road.

Good Luck!

i couldnt agree more.i have been contracting for 15 years and i learn something new everyday.weither it is an easier way to build a radius wall or better way of keeping books.if you want to suceed dont ever think you know everything you need to know.dont be afraid to ask question from you peers.if you are just learing the trade itself and not the business,my advice to you is STOP NOW!go find a job with a seasoned mason, work for him for a few years, watch him,ask him questions.LEARN from him.
how long will it take for your business to get off the ground?that depends on several factors as far as i am concerned.quality of your work, dependablity, honesty and how well you present yourself to potental customers(if you show up to give a bid,and beer cans fly out your pu door, its not a good sign.)drink your beer after you have met with a new customer.dont drink on the job and dont let your help.ge willing to work more than 8 to 5.thats about all i can thik of for now.

i figured out how to make a small fortune in the masonry business.......i started with a large one!!
good luck

30 years, and I'm still on the runway waiting for clearence to "TAKEOFF"

Did get asked to work a highrise once, but that swing stage scaffolding scares me to death.

Tbird, your question is too broad. Narrow it down a bit, and I bet you will get plenty of assistance.

This answer stands for construction in general and applys to masons and all.

If you know the biz and your skilled at the trade, it can take off with the shake of a hand.

If your new to the biz and still learning the trade, well, you'll be awhile, if you make it at all.

glass, the key word there is CAN.on the other shake of the hand it CAN
fall flat on its backside.
too many time a young bricklayer, who is making 20 buck or so an hour, sits in a bar thinking,"i can make more if i had my own business".so they go out and buy themselves a mixer and saw and other tools and quit their job.and even tho they are good at what they do,they dont have a clue as to how to run a business.they no longer have a boss looking over their shoulder chewing them out if they dont come to work one day.they think, hey im my own boss,i can take off if i want.or lets cut out at noon and go fishing.that weekly paycheck isnt there anymore.and what check they do get has to be shared with the, help, the bank, insurances, suppliers, and some set back for breakdowns or new tool purchases.ive been there and done that.i was the same way....i dont wanna work today.....hey boss can i have a draw......cant pay this week cuz we didnt get the job done....
i know it sounds like i am tring to keep young mason from starting out on their own,im not,im tring to help them understand its not as easy as they think it is.

Re: Just Started

Generally in a small buisness start up it is assumed that you will not show any profit for the first two to three years. But that is what they teach you in buisness class at the local J.C. Mostly it depends on the individual that is starting the buisness. If you can do the job, get the bids, run the crews, complete the job in the time specified or agreed upon, provide a quality product, and keep the customer 110% satisfied then you have a good chance at success.
That and having good resources like this forum helps out a WHOLE bunch.
Best of luck to you.
