Was I Wrong?

i was working in a small town a couple days ago.i was relaying the face of a building, that i had tore the brick off in an insurance repair(about 2,000 brick).the owner of the building called me a couple weeks ago about letting this guy lay a flower bed and some other work around his building.i told him i didnt care because i was busy, but still wanted to do the main work.he told me that it was mine until i said i didnt want it.
anyway the other bricklayer is a guy i hired last year to work for me but he never showed up.he has not worked as a bricklayer since moving to oklahoma last year.okay,he does the flower bed and a couple other thing around the building.they dont look bad,but not my quality of work.
he shows up there this weekend while im laying the building and puts up a sign advertising his business.i asked him not to put it up until after i was finished and had been gone for a few days.he gets pissed, calls me some names,i threaten to shove the sign up his .he calls the building owner.he comes out wants to know the problem.i tell him it is nothing personal, but i didnt want anyone thinking that he had done the work that i was doing.i mean the guy is no threat,he has no equipment other than a wheel borrow.
the building owner, who i find out is now this guys partner, tells him to take the sign down and put it back i a week.the guy is mad but does it.
so was i wrong?

Re: Was I Wrong?

Nope - he shouldn't have put up the sign in the first place without the owners consent & the owner should have consulted with you first if he was allowing it.

You can always get 2 signs made up, 1 that says quality brick work on walls & the second that says flower garden beds only

My two cents...it does sound like he was stepping on your toes a bit...life is short, let it go.

I side with you on this one! Unless of course the other guy was licensed!

Or even better find a HO built brick mailbox or wall and stick the sign in front of it.

Re: Was I Wrong?

You are absolutely correct. I always thought its weird having two companies of the same trade working on the same site, at the same time. Maybe just me.
Only happened to me once, fortunately the other crew was great to work around, we actually helped each other out a couple of times. Our scopes of work
were entirely separate from each other.

Re: Was I Wrong?

I like the direct approach you took, informing him of the next location of his sign. Some of these guys have no sign etiquette. One guy around here has no problem jamming a sign in the ground with more square footage than the bricks hes laid on the job.

Ackward, but it needed to be done. You don't want to misrepresent what you do- and vica-versa. Let him put his sign in front of the planter- or in it!
