I Want To Do A Concrete Acid Stain In Our House- How Hard/expensive Is It To Do?

We have this big room addition- about 15'x15' and the flooring is concrete covered by light colored carpet, and it's TRASHED! The rest of the house is hard wood floors. I was thinking of pulling up the carpet and doing an acid stain concrete flooring. We've never done this before, and I was wondering about time, money, and level of difficulty to achieve something like these below:

Poor Mr. Mellissa, his honey-do list is increasing ....

There's a member here who just did one, and they posted pics ...

But, I can't remember who it was ....

But, it sounds like a good idea ...

From what I've read around on the 'net', its not really all that hard to do. You do need the right equipment. There are different textured rollers you can use. It also helps to have a bit of an 'artists' touch. Its definitely not a walk in the park, but I think something you should be able to pull off.

This site has alot of material for such a project.http://www.bontool.com/category1.asp...y&S=&G=&C=&N=1

There is lots to click on on the left side of the screen.

Re: I Want To Do A Concrete Acid Stain In Our House- How Hard/expensive Is It To Do?

What I am going to do in the new specs we are starting soon is use a small wet saw to cut grout lines, 1/8 inch deep, in an 18" X 18" or maybe 24" pattern, then when stained it will look like tile. The effect I have seen is stunning, since the stain will darken the grout lines and make a great contrast. The wet look is achieved after the floor is stained to the color you want...best advice I have been given is start at the light application...you can always darken to taste, but you can never get it lighter, ever.

Re: I Want To Do A Concrete Acid Stain In Our House- How Hard/expensive Is It To Do?

Joasis, here is the best method I have seen:

Stain the floor, seal the crap out of it, then cut your 1/4x1/4 or 1/4x1/8 joints. Then come back and grout the joints, and reseal. This method gets rid of the major annoyance/callback issue, which is dirt in the joints.

As an aside, if you do stained floors, you should seal them, then put a lot of wax on the floor, 8-10 coats. This will protect the sealer, and can be maintained a lot easier than trying to maintain the sealer alone. Most floors I have seen without wax show wear paths within a couple of years.

For sealing I suggest this.
http://www.convergent-group.com/html/english.htm

I used some on some Concrete Countertop samples and it works great.

Re: I Want To Do A Concrete Acid Stain In Our House- How Hard/expensive Is It To Do?

Thanks Tscar, I keep making notes to self. I saw the pattern I like in Branson...and I thought I would grout, til I looked and saw they used a very shallow cut, and looked like they maybe sprayed a dark stain in the lines, not worrying about getting it lightly outside the lines...then the floor stain, and it looked like "fired" tiles, since they were "burnt" looking at the edges. I loved it.

You're not kidding. Just today he said he really needs a day off to do absolutely nothing (last weekend was straight birthday parties, weekend before on his one day off, I made him paint and install some molding).... Little does he know I have this project in store for him this weekend.... MUHAHAHAHA!!!

I'm surprised not many of you have done this. They look so cool. I'll let you know how it goes when we get around to doing it. Although it better be soon, because the boys smashed playdough in the carpet, and it just isn't coming out! So I had to cover it up with a quilt to hide it. I just might do this project myself.... That'll get hubby up and moving for sure!

I bought a book a while back, and it says to do this:

Quote:
"A 1/8-inch layer of gray polymer-modified concrete was applied over an old concrete floor. The next day, acid stain in a color known as Aged Buff was rubbed in. Two coats of sealer and two of wax produced the sheen."

Re: I Want To Do A Concrete Acid Stain In Our House- How Hard/expensive Is It To Do?

Had my pool deck done like that but didnt add the clear sheild looked kinda easy. but have never done it ( always looks easy ) the clear sheild would have been to slippery for pool deck . thers a web site here has all stuff and directions
if concret is cracked or chipped you may want to look at an overlay !!
try to find a picture of one done with camera straight down they look very different??

http://www.donnellyandsons.com/concrete-stains.shtml

watch out for the smell of the acid if its enclosed in the house rent BIG fans

good luck with it

So, has anyone done this in thier house yet. I see by the date the last post was almost a year ago. I'm also looking for a cost effective way to dress up our basement.

Im doing this in a couple days in a friends house. Were putting down the overlay in his kitchen. We plan on putting a design in the center of the floor.

Might as well get fancy your first time right?

Here's another place you might check. A long running forum designed for acid staining.

Re: I Want To Do A Concrete Acid Stain In Our House- How Hard/expensive Is It To Do?

I've seen a friends house where they put down horse manure on the fresh concrete.Very nice marble effect, but if you think the smell of the acid was bad...Keep the slab clean of all markings from the electrician etc.The harder the troweling the better the marbling.Inside slabs work better because of this. You can add compounds to the sealer to help with the slippage.I've heard of using baby powder.

I don't know anything about it.

There's no way in hell you need 8-10 coats of wax with the right products. I do a total of 3-4 wax coats and it will hold up about 3 years. The right sealers will not be slippery either, but sharkgrip can be added as well. PM me if you need help Melissa.

Maybe not in a residential application, but 10 is barely enough for a restaurant.

You must be using just a regular wax. I guarantee I won't have to do more than 4 coats of the product I use, and recoat after 2-3 years. Even in a restaurant.

I use an industrial strength 100% solids coating they call a wax, but it's more of an actual coating than a wax. Super duty stuff!
