I Need A To Pour 1/4 Yard Of Black Concrete...

I need to put a strip drain across a driveway. We will surround the drain with 8" of concrete on each side. Its about 1/4 of a yard to pour it. We do not want to use normal colored concrete because it will stand out to much from the concrete. We want to attempt to dye it black.

Whats the lowest cost way to do this? I can get black portland here. Can I just mix my own concrete with that? We just need the concrete to blend in with the pavement.

you could just buy a bag of lamp black and add it to the concrete truck
or you could mix it by hand.

Lamp black is cheap and if you have a drum mixer I would mix the 1/4 myself.

Lampblack and carbon are really only physically held the the cement mix and do not really "dye" or color the concrete. They are guaranteed to fade and weather to a much lighter color. The good thing is that they are cheap. Good iron oxide will cost you many times more.

The best material to made concrete black is to use black iron oxide You use a maximum of 7% of the cement weight and it very strong. It is normally used by concrete products and a typical ready mix supplier is not willing to use something that good, so you might have a tough time to find it. You might get lucky if you have a good masonry dealer, although most of the blacks they sell are carbon based and not iron oxides.

When I worked for a concrete products manufacturer, we would only sell in 10 - 25# bag lots if that did not jeprodize our inventory of raw materials, since we only bought pigment once a year and by the load.

You can buy liquid iron oxide at any home depot store. look on the bottle for compliance with ASTM C 979 Standard specification for pigments for integrally colored concrete.

you can mix a 1/4 yard of concrete yourself with 8 buckets of 3/4 or one inch concrete stone, 8 buckets of sand and 2 94 lb bags of portland cement. Mix two buckets of stone, two buckets of sand, and 1/2 a bag of cement per batch.
Check the bottle for pigment dosage per bag of cement and add accordingly.

Also remember this guy is retrofitting a drain into an driveway, not a shower. If you ask me a little fade over the years isn't a big deal.

I'd go the home depot route with the black dye that they sell. Prob not the iron oxide but sufficient if you want to go cheap and will prob hold up just fine assuming you digger deep and get an adequate amount of concrete in there. I would also throw a couple sticks of rebar in on each side.

Why not roll some tar across it when it dries in a few days?
