How To Anchor Sandstone Wall Panels

1 1/2" minus sandstone; 2'x4' panels; 17 lbs +/- SF. Design specifications; use adjustable masonry ties set in mortar bed. Steel frame structure, Gyp sheathing, one story; all panels bear on footer or lintels. My concern; stone will likely be 1 1/4" - 1 1/2" thick, plus 1" gap; not leaving much of a mortar bed or room for the ties (1 3/4" +/-). Is this design sufficient to hold the panels? Suggestions without adding to installation costs? I could use split ties if they are available 1 3/4" leg, ...help before I RFI engineer...

That is the correct system (with split leg or pins), but I have never seen it done at less than 2-1/2" (limestone). That is getting very close to an adheered system weight, and there is no way in the world I would do it as specified without a 100% wavier of responsability from the structural engineer.

Laticrete has an epoxy that is supposed to be able to anchor a 1.75" veneer. It's applied to the back of the stone in spots, so drainage is maintained. They say no mechanical fasteners necessary. I don't know about your backup though, I think they spec cement board. It's worth a look.
