Here Is A Stumper

I was asked this today, and have no idea, other than a vague remembrance to it being french and having to do with a type of tool. At any rate, I can not find it online at all.

Why is it called torpedo sand?

Dubious, but I was once told that's
what they used to pack the charge
when they torpedoed a well.
I'd like to hear something else too.

As I recall it was for transporting explosives, but here are a few other explanations where it may have gotten the name

Mining with NG - shells / torpedos - whole packed with sand

Another take - 2/3 down http://yarchive.net/explosives/armstrongs_mixture.html

Dutch ships

Now to take some Tylenol & call it a night

Re: Here Is A Stumper

Around here it was the description of a coarse clean sand that was finer then pea rock, but coarser than concrete sand.

Frequently, it was used to "choke" the coarse rock that was used around drain tile and also in some grout.

Just little bit of local "folk lore".
