I came across this job recently in an upscale development. I don't know the builder or the mason but it is hard to believe that someone is still so ignorant of the proper way to prep for thin veneer stone.
I have seen the results of this type of installation often when I am called to look at a three year old house with leaks and black mold. The tear off and replacement is ugly and expensive, and I hate this kind of work. The only ones happy in the whole mess are the lawyers.
Ok, just to add fuel to the fire. Taking a look at the OBC (Ontario Building Code) 1997. Their requirement for stucco (it doesn't mention thin veneer but I'll assume it's alot closer to stucco that regular masonry veneer). Their requiremet is ONE layer of a WRB that isn't tar based (asphalt based is okay though). Then lath etc... This conforms to subsection 9.23.17.3
Now I know the code has had a few revisions in the last 15 or so years but in 1997 a singler layer of WRB was fine for stucco application. If you want it to last 50 years.
