Grouting Cultured Stone. Need Help Pls

first of all thanks to the guys who helped me with install of the cultured stone around my fireplace, WE did a pretty good job. my next question is grouting this stone. the stone i purchased was the owens corning cobblefield austin(light biege) and i want to grout it in a color similar to the stone. do they sell a tinted grout and if so whats the product name. and in regards to the hearthstone what type of sealer do i use. thanks for any help guys and have a great weekend

We have white premixed white mortar in this area but not all parts of the country do. You may have to use glass block mortar, which is fine, just a little expensive. In lieu of that, you will have to buy white masonry cement and sand (regular orange or gray sand, you don't need white).

We use a product called "Spec Mix" which is a pre mixed mortar for applying and grouting cultured stone. It drys to a light grey but can be colored with standard powered cement colorants.

I have used Quick crete color tints but I don't know if they have light colors. as for appling I like to use a grout bag I just cut the end so the opening is about 1/2" to 3/4" then I have a couple of wooden shims I have fashioned into smoothing knifes as I call them. I made up a set of 4 sticks and I have a 1" paint brush. Good luck oh I also have three brass wire brushes I use if I get any mud on the stones and it drys, I use the brass wire brush cause it doesn't scratch the stone like wire brushes do. also use plastic brushes at times.

Go to a brick supplier they will have various mortar colors, just make sure you get the right consistency of mixture to squeeze through your grout bag.

Use a type s or type n colored cement from a brick and block supplier near you. In Maryland the bags are 70# and mix with a 17-18 shovels of sand or use buckets to get the sand cement ratio just right. The bags cost about$18 each. The brick store should have color swatches to choose the right color. Sometimes using a darker mortar with the lighter stone is a good combination it tends to define the stones better.

ok i can see colored mortar costing that.i was thinking regular mason was that price.and had i read his post more completly i would have seen he said colored mortar.

With that particular color of CUltured Stone. I would just use White mortar with regular sand. That way you will not get inconsistancies from mixing in color incorrectly. most in our area do this.
