Glass Block Entry To Shower

I need to install a glass block door frame at the entrance into a large tile shower. No door. But maybe a door in the future if the customer doesn't care for the open shower feel. So far I've framed my R.O. with lvl studs for nice straight wall. The glass block is 3 3/4" thick. My finished wall will be 5 1/2" thick (tile inside shower and tile wainscott outside shower with drywall above the wainscott). Any suggestions for making the transition from my tile wall into my glass block look decent?

Not sure if I'm picturing it right but I'm thinking flush the block with the tile on the inside and trim around the outside [1-3/4" difference] with a crown mold or something similiar.

If I am understanding you, you will want to wrap the tile around the jamb for an inch or 4 to the outside, then center the glass block in the wall.

Re: Glass Block Entry To Shower

I'd do it with the block flush to the exterior wall and deal with the tile inside.

Glass block is usually associated with Art Deco or Modern. Both accentuate clean lines. Which side will be seen most often?

Watch some old B&W movies and you'll see what I mean. The second revival was in the late 50's (space age). AAAAAAAAAAnd their back again! I'll be replacing a bathroom window with them soon.

Re: Glass Block Entry To Shower

I'd try to work within block specs. They also have 1/2 blocks. Opening a block lends to condensation and potential mold. I wouldn't do it.

Parting glass is not a big deal. For block, I'd wet saw with a diamond wheel or heat and pop. Score and pop would be a challenge but could probably be done.

I have never seen a job done with cut block, and would not recommend it. The block are exacuated, and while they can be cut and drilled, they are prone to implosion.

I'm with Teeter, keep 'em flush to the exterior so when you're on the throne they look right.
I've never cut a glassblock and never seen it done. They are subject to implosion and if nothing else would probably trap condensation.Bond + 1".

thanks guys, like i mentioned i have never used glass block.
to my untrained eye, some applications appeared to be "cut" looks like i was incorrect.

well ill have to read a few more books on this subject.
btw the US army corp of engineers, masonry ref manual is fantastic.
