Foundation Probing
I recently went to visit a job that the ho wanted a two level deck either repaired or replaced. Upon further inspection it looked like the foundation of the back of the house is sinking..This is causing the structual problems to deck i would imagine..I called a structual eng. to come out and look at it and he has requested us to dig some holes around block foundation to probe further...This is something i don't do on a regular basis and i dont really know how to charge ho for digging holes for the probing of foundation..eng wants us to dig 6 holes 4 feet down >>>how would i estimate doing this not knowing if i will run into any problems w/ soil??? any help would be appreciated..His exact report has not been given yet only visited site today>>.

Re: Foundation Probing
I was answering him not you. I can only tell you how fast I dig a hole, not how fast you can.

Re: Foundation Probing
Enter into a consulting contract with the HO, bill everything at T&M, kinda like your lawyer during a divorce, open up another hole and it costs more.
You can give them a range of what you believe the minimum will be as well as what you expect the maximum to be, but do that in writing, you do that verbally and the won't here the max, just the min and want to hold you to it. If they are not interested, walk away.

Re: Foundation Probing
Sorry, dincao, I was not trying to be rude, I was just at work and in a hurry.
Some things to think about to figure your price: Any plants that need to be moved? Beds to be restored? Access. Can you make a pile next to the hole or do you have to wheelbarrow it away and then back. Drains and utilities. Are there any and where exactly are they. Get something in writing about the cost, even if it isn't a full contract. Good luck!

Re: Foundation Probing
Call before you dig!
I'm just guessing here, but I'm thinking you are a bit green in the field. Call to have utilities located. You don't want to buy a new phone, cable, water, whatever service entrance.

Re: Foundation Probing
Call me crazy, but if you're digging next to the foundation, won't this be dirt that was already moved at some point in the past? What could you possibly run into that would stop you from digging a hole?
