Footer For Subdivision Sign
Hello guys,
I've got an upcoming renovation of a subdivision entrance sign. There is a sign with the sub's name already there that is being upgraded to something bigger and more appealing. The existing sign is on a footer, and I will need to expand the size of the footer to accomodate the new design (to be constructed w/ CMU and manufactured stone.) My question is on adding to the existing footer; I originally thought of excavating around it, then tying in the new pour to the old footer via re-bar. But now I am wondering about that, because I don't really know about the existing footer, i.e. how deep is it, how sound, etc? I've attached a pic - any thoughts? |

Re: Footer For Subdivision Sign
We had a similar situation that we faced years ago. We did not, however, have to add footing all the way around the existing. In our case, once we started digging we noted that the existing footer was in good shape and plenty deep enough for the load it was carrying. We drilled into the existing and epoxyed rebar every 12" and never had any problems.
Does the existing sign show any signs of settling, cracking, etc? |

Re: Footer For Subdivision Sign
the current sign itself looks sound, although the facing stone is starting to become detached from the block (more a matter of poor mortar surface prep than settling footer I think....)

Re: Footer For Subdivision Sign
You should be able to see if the footing is thick enough when you dig for the new footing. Like ALT said dowel into the old footing with rebar and use a high quality epoxy. I have seen this process done many times to correct mistakes and for revisions, almost everytime it was checked off by the engineer also.
