Fire Pit

I didn't build this one, A (masonry contractor) friend did. It is on top of a hill in the middle of a 100 acres west of Austin. A picnic table pad, a couple of tent pads and an outhouse is all he is going to develop on it. We broke it in this weekend, although we only had small fires.

It is triple wythe, 2 of firebrick and the stone on the exterior, with an airspace between the rock and firebrick. The floor is perfectly pitched and provided with weeps through the wall; we got 6" + of rain last week and it was dry as a bone. The brick are old Chicago "pink range".

Re: Fire Pit

One thing I did not like about it, and we already fixed, is the way the grill was setup. As you can see, it is too low and the access is from the inside. I would have built it into the wall with the opening for the coals on the outside, but we fixed it by filling the grill area with gapped bricks to bring the grate up to the top.

Are you sure? We killed this six-footer within 20 minutes of setting up camp about 5 yards away from my tent:

The reaction was predictable:

Ts -

You certainly enjoy your job and your customers obviously are glad you are working with them.

Did it taste like chicken when grilled? - I always wondered.

Re: Fire Pit

Dunno, I always say if it tastes like chicken, I'll just eat the chicken.

(I have had rattlesnake and it doesn't taste like chicken, it tastes like !@#@!, same as alligator and frog legs)

Re: Fire Pit

Nice pit!

You must have gotten a bad snake.......gator and frogs too. Never met one that I didn't like.
