Estimating Questions

I wonder if I could get some advice as to how to estimate the amount of stone needed for a project?

I am dry stacking large stones as retaining walls for planting areas as well as surrounding the bases of a few columns. I have a drawn plan to work from, so you would think it's easy. Well, these planters and columns are all over the place on a pool deck. It's not just a straight wall. Any ideas?

You need to give people more information so they can possibly answer your question. For starters: What kind of large stones are you talking about????

Re: Estimating Questions

You priced it per cubic foot, so if you can find the weight per cubic foot of the stone you will be somewhat close.

Re: Estimating Questions

The answer is ELEMENTARY. LOL. Get it? Alright it wsnt that bad

Are you saying you cant do a take off because the plan is a foot print plan that has no elevations? If thats the case your gonna need more info to do a exact quote or you may end up doing a number as close as possible from guesstimating it and have a unit number in there to invoice on the completetd amount if no one can give better info to you.

If your qustion is about how to do the take off your gonna need more help than we can give you here.

Re: Estimating Questions

Thanks guys,

I did go by the cuft, and I do know the weight; it's 135lbs/cuft for ozark moss quarry snapped at about a 4-10" face height x 8-12" depth and 1-2' lengths. I came up with a large order becauase of the size of the stone and the size of the job. I guess the lesson here is; don't let the stone yard make me second guess myself. I need to be certain when I am ordering 50,000 lbs of stone to be delivered to someones driveway for a while.
