Re: De-icers On Concrete
Its going to peel. A concrete buddy of mine did his own stamped concrete driveway back in spring last year and didn't use any salt or de-icer this winter. It still peeled because of the salt on the cars from the roads dripping onto it. Obviously not as bad as if he would have thrown salt down but it still broke up a little.

Re: De-icers On Concrete
yea thats what i thoguht as well. i did a big concrete sidewalk job and my client is trying to blame me for the concrete peeling. Meanwhile they used tons of de-icing materials all winter long on it. So the blame is apparently on themselves. Just need some reassurance from other people so i can present him with this information.

Re: De-icers On Concrete
I know one of our concrete suppliers used to come out to jobs like this, take samples of the de-laminated crete, & they cluld analyze if this was salt or other de-icer material mixed in. I would imagine they still do, as well as other suppliers, & they could probably document it for you. We went thru this years ago, & now make it clear to all crete customers (on the invoice) that use of de-icer's is at there own risk.

Re: De-icers On Concrete
I hope you use air entrained concrete.
Around here, in a good year, you could not even get concrete for driveway delivered from a good supplier unless it is 4000 psi, air entrained and 3"-5" slump. Some suppliers will deliver the concrete, but a waiver on the guarantee must be signed before unloading. There is not enough profit in concrete to take achance and sell the wrong concrete and get into a law suit.

Re: De-icers On Concrete
I know when I was up north the drivers use to carry air with them and a measuring cup, if they showed up and it was an exterior pour they automatically stopped, called in to dispatch and added the air...if you didn't order with the air that is.
They don't want the liability

Re: De-icers On Concrete
Im not a chemistry major but this is what I have noticed over the last few years in the field.
A sodium chloride based product will destroy concrete in one season. Magnesium chloride is a little better but not much, usually says "easy on concrete". Potassium chloride is the best of the 3 and usually has a "pet safe" label on it. The safest is as posted above in another post, a plastic snow shovel. |
