Dairy Building Concrete Floor Question

Hello,

Im going to be renting farm land to start dairy farming, problem is their is no housing facilities that are suitable for my needs so i must erect all needed facilties. Im also only going to be on this land for a year at the most so Im going to try to keep the price tag on unremovable investments (I.E: Concrete Flooring) to the BARE Minimum.
In your opinions, what would be the absolute cheapest route to pour this concrete slab (42 by 150 or more). I just need it to last a year before Im out. The concrete man wants to charge $117 a yard.
All suggestions will be appreicated.

Sounds like a strange way to start dairy farming. Why don't you just wait a year?

So this slab is for a the whole set up, milking then feeding?

Dad owned a Dairy Service business for years. The milking equipment and feeding equipment aint cheap, you're going to install it all, then tear it out next year?

Whatever you pour, make sure it is designed right, it drains well and there is a place to drain the water and other things off the slab. You will be dealing with a lot of water and debris.

If you are planning on selling dairy products (milk), the buyers may hant some assurance it is clean and up to standards.

After doing some (very little) milking (most in the pail), I discovered you can get a lot of stuff laying around and need water to keep things healthy.

If it's only for a year just throw down some old newspapers.

Re: Dairy Building Concrete Floor Question

go to your local lumber yard and pick up some of their throw away pallets.lay them down for a floor.cow manure will fall thru the spaces in the pallets, keeping your clean up cost down.only problem i see is teaching your milk cows to walk only on the slats.

i would think if your are starting a dairy farm there would be health codes that will need to be followed as far as the flooring and such.i cant see spending the money to build it if you are moving it in a year.i would put that money in a cd and wait a year and build it where you are going to stay.

Whatever you do, don't forget about the requirement that the concrete and everything metal in it be electrically bonded together and the slab have sufficient wire in it to create the required "equipotential plane" for livestock confinement areas. . Otherwise, the inspectors can make you tear the whole thing out and start over.

Could you just throw some chicken wire under the old newspapers?

Re: Dairy Building Concrete Floor Question

Why do a slab at all?
I would grade some crushed run in there and put a roller on it.
You might have to freshen it up now and then, but it would be cheaper to install, and you can dig it out and take it with you when you move!

I am pretty sure that the regulations are a bit more stringent than pallets or gravel. This greenhorn is jerking your chain.
