Cultured Stone Over Existing Brick Fireplace
i've got a client who has an existing fireplace/hearth constructed of brick. she wants to go over the brick with manufactured stone. most of my experience is outdoors, laying up cultred stone on block. my thought for this was to attached galv lath to the ex brick, scratch coat type N then modified thinset to adhere the stone. is this method acceptable for this project? thx,

Re: Cultured Stone Over Existing Brick Fireplace
as long as the brick fireplace has not been painted there is no need for lath.go over the brick with a scratch coat and then the stone.

the brick is a bit dirty/sooty though - still OK or should I clean before scratch coat, and how? thanks for the reply.

Crud Cutter is very good for getting rid of fireplace soot.

Re: Cultured Stone Over Existing Brick Fireplace
I'm in the middle of one of these now. Make sure you check that the hearth is level. The one I'm doing wasn't. I had to do a dry pack mud bed over the brick. This was for a granite slab on the hearth, though. I wasn't sure from your post if you're putting in a slab or tiles. Tiles would obviously be a bit more forgiving.
