Cultured Stone

I have a customer that wants cultured stone on a fireplace. The fireplace is a pellet stove. Standard stick and drywall for the fireplace hearth and raised chimney. The chimney has a slight curve and shrinks as it goes up to ceiling. Can cultered stone be applied to cement backer board?

Re: Cultured Stone

Seems that with the "kiva" style in place it would be a lot easier to do it correctly, with lath and a scratch.

Re: Cultured Stone

When I install cultured stone, on a studded wall, I put up cement board, then attach metal hardware cloth / metal mesh to the cement board, with a whole lot of screws. Then just paste the stones on ya kno.

The mason who does cultured stone for me nails up wire lath with roofing nails, does a scratch coat, then comes back and mortars (or cements?)stone to scratch coat....

Wire over hardi-backer is a waste of time and money.

Hardi-backer with thinset. It is fast, indestructable, and the only downside is you have to be a little neater. Anytime you do a scratchcoat, that automatically means you have a 2 day project.

Re: Cultured Stone

So Hardi with mortar can be done. It made sense to me when I thought about it, just wanted to ask the real pros. So know that I know it works, are there any tricks/tips. Does it matter which thinset. Thanks for the info gents.
