Chimney Woes

Have a customer who would like to remove her 1 1/2% sloped hot tar roof and put on a 4:12 pitch roof with asphalt shingles. I met the architect over there today and he put quite a damper on the plans due to the chimney.

The house was built in the 60's and he says the code has changed, I can't just add on to the chimney to bring it up to 2 feet above any part of the roof with in 10 feet. It all has to be brought up to code, which means a total rebuild as the foundation for the chimney is inadequate and there is no rebar in the structure as is.

The architect has another project that is being held up by the same problem and doesn't have a solution other than to bring the chimney down and go with an insert.

Anyone have a way to bring the chimney up to code without breaking the bank?

Re: Chimney Woes

Are you talking Fireplace or just furnace/ hot water? How about abandoning the old chimney and maybe tearing it out and going with B vent or direct vent?

Oh, I reread and see you said insert. Never mind.

Rich,

You aren't giving us enough info to comment. I would recommend checking this out:

Re: Chimney Woes

Thanks for the link Brickie -- it looks like there is really no way to raise the chimney height if the city wants it up to code. That would require a complete demo and rebuild.
