Chimney Set Up
The last post about chimney repairs got me wondering how some of you guys set up chimneys in the middle of a roof or other precarious places? We usually build a tower and plank over onto roof jacks or a saddle we built and put props under the planks for rigidity. We obviously use tie offs and harnesses as well, I was just wondering if there was any old timey ways of doing it that we don't know.

Re: Chimney Set Up
Not "old timey" by any means, but we always use a Skytrack on those style of chimneys, at least on every new construction. More time laying masonry, les stime setting up & taking down scaffolding.

Re: Chimney Set Up
I have done 4 to 5 large chimney restorations in the middle of the house. I have always built a tower and then a catwalk with railing to the chimney.
Yes its more time setting up and tearing down, but around here a 60 ft sky jack can be more than $700 per day and you still have to maneuver around the house, fill any ruts and I have to reserve 14 days in advance and then use it or lose it. when my day or two comes. I would rather pay myself $500 a day to set up and tear down scaffold than the pay the rental company the same amount and have ruts and tight quarters to deal with and then if it rains I am out of luck til I reset my appointment. May not be the best, but it works for me.

Re: Chimney Set Up
I always build towers and plank into roof. I have one coming up Wednesday as a matter of fact. Not too bad though. Its towards the edge of the roof but it is a steep pitch. Probably 12/12 or so.

Re: Chimney Set Up
RZB,
dak and 6string are in my camp! I always set my own tower, ramp, roof set-up, put-log configuration, whatever it takes. My crew and I are in the air and I like to know it's safe and I usually only feel that way if we set it. I did one job where a scaffold outfit set the whole thing and we all bitched through the job 'cause it didn't work the way my staging works. I have Vanguard/American and Waco set the staging, never again! I almost never work off of wooden staging on the roof, never was happy after I invested in steel staging. I learned on wooden staging and ladders and skipped straight to steel when I went solo 15 years ago. D. |

Re: Chimney Set Up
In addition to some of the stuff already mentioned, we use Chicken ladders, roof jacks, ridge hooks, etc.,

Re: Chimney Set Up
Here is what my set up looked like today.
As you can see, we utilize roof jacks and some 16's and 12's to helps us span lengths for walkers and materials. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Heres the finished product ![]() ![]() And of course my mugshot.

Re: Chimney Set Up
6
(I used to have an employee we called 6, but that was because he had a total of six fingers on two hands. )I showed your pictures to my 16 yr old son. He said " I wouldn't walk on that if you paid me to!" Ha Ha, I have had set ups that look like that, but the boy isn't real fond of heights, I have noticed that for sure. Looks like its still a little bit nippy up there in God's country. Our swearshirt days are numbered here. Glad you have work. Good looking stuff, personally not my taste, but well done. Don't send that photo to your insurance, they might have a few words about railing and harness's

Re: Chimney Set UpQuote:
Thanks for the compliment. Not really my taste either, but I just get paid to put it up, not pick it out lol. Were still a little slow in this area, but work is tricklin in. Hopefully I can leave the sweatshirt in the truck soon. But spring in WI is pretty unreliable from one day to the next.
