Question

Chimney Problem

Ok. So I have built my single flue chimney up to the roof. I have the hole cut and I am ready to go. But I used one peice block around my 8 inch Round Flue tile. The outside diameter of the tile is 9.5 inches. The blocks are cut so the tile fits in easily. But how do I figure out my brick top? If I use the usual six bricks in my first course, how do I get the flue tile down into the chimney?! Unless I open up my head joints, but that looks horrible, I end up with head joints that are like 2 inches wide. obviously unnacceptable. let me know how to transition from these blocks to a brick top! Please!? I am guessing that I build out a bit and ad a couple more bricks into the first course somehow and make the overall size of the chimney bigger in order to accomodate the flue size?? But how would I support that properly? Im confused, please help me out if you can. Thanks

- Jack

Re: Chimney Problem

Is the block larger than the brick bond. If you bring the brick in to the inside edge if the block does that help. I haven't done chimney block in a long time, but I think I remember that the block was thicker than the width of a brick.

You could always corbel out to a better bond.

not sure if they are available in your area but here a norman or metric thiwall is available they are longer 9"x3 1/4 high and will easily accomdate a flue.corbel first course out.another option would be to continue block to terimanation then cultured stone or cultured brick over.if you are not a tradesman used to bricklaying then this may work easier.bricklaying is a trade taking years to master the tricks..hope this helps
