Best Way To Gain 1/2 Inch?

I looked at a job today. I need to instal about 4k sq ft of marble over concrete. Basically, we want to use 1 1/2inch bullnose coping and 1 inch marble. Whats the best way to make up that 1/2inch? I am planning to use some type of thin set to adhere the marble.

I've done a ton of indoor tile work before, and a ton of drylay blue stone/pavers. Just never marble outside.

Whatever advice you could give you be great.

Or what if we use 5/8s marble, and need to gain 1 full inch?

Assuming that there is a lot more field than coping, you would be better to saw the coping.

So there is no kind of south leveling concrete i can pour or anything?

I could use 1 1/2 inch marble, but we are limited in the number of differencet sizes their are.

And i want to advoid using motar to install all the marble like you would with blue stone. Its such a large area, that thin set would be so much quicker.

There is, but it is big bucks, and would have to be done in 3/8" or less lifts. You certainly don't want to just mud the stone up that high, either.

Whats this stuff called? I just think saw cutting the bullnose down 1/2 inch would not look the best. Whatever this stuff cost does not really matter.

Errrr self leveling will not work, the decks are pitched!

Ray its tumbled marble. Stays cool and not skid when wet. If you fall and hit your hear it proably means you were drinking to much!

My first thought would be drypack also. Can you dry pack just a half inch OK???

I can almost guarentee that thin setting, or even using a medium set mortar like marble mate to a poured slab will be a real bitch, unless tha slab is dead on flat.. Dry pack can assure a flat surface to work on.

Yea the slab is not perfect the way it is now. What exactly is drypack? I am guessing its not something that is easy to do?

Could you thinset down 1/2" cement board? Use an un-modified thin sit.
Re: levelling cement, Check with your ready mix people, We've all seen the cement poured over pex pipes for radiant heat, what is that and how thin can you do it? I'm working on a couple of fireplaces in a house now that is entirely radiant heat and all the floors are concrete over normal framing.
Yeah, the self levelling is expensive per bag.
If you haven't done dry pack before and decide to go that way, you might want to find a good tile mud man in your area to give a hand, as the first time can be a little harder than it sounds to get it perfect.

drypack is what you do when you are putting in a shower floor.its portland cement mixed with sand and very little water.you pack it in and screed it to you desired height.since your slab is not perfect, this would make it alot better surface to work on.after the dry pack has set up you would lay your tile marble or what ever just like you would with hardi backer or concrete.
