Art Block And Parging
I looked at a job last week and there is some foundation repair. Art block that has been painted.
I already met the sand blaster and were good to go there. I had bid packing the joints with mortar and not striking them, mechanically fasten metal lath , scrath coat and finish with synthetic stucco. Exposed block is 20" from grade to stucco. I'm being told that's overkill, I disagree and don't want to go back in a year or 2 for a complaint on cracking. Mason wants to skim coat the block and then stucco. I would refund the cost of lathing if I didn't do it that way, but I feel better with lath. I do think I'll talk to another mason now. But what do you guys think? Any opinions?

Re: Art Block And Parging
That is one of those calls I would not make without actually seeing it in person. I tend to agree with overkill when the possibility of failure will cost more than doing it with a small margin of safety. If I were going to lath it, I would not bother sandblasting it though, and in fact it will perform better if you don't. The paint will act as a bond breaker between the wall and the stucco, and thus not transmit cracks through to the new finish.

Re: Art Block And Parging
Thanks, I hadn't thought of not sandblasting. The reason is old paint flaking and the face of the art block (stone looking) is crumbled on the West side of the foundation. I'm gonna talk to another guy. Better to get it the first time, I don't have many callbacks that are my fault. But I get some. Blaster said he may go right thru the joints in some places, a few spots anyway.

Re: Art Block And Parging
i agree with tscar and not sandblast.like you said he will go thru some of the head joints for sure.before installing the lath i would for sure go around and knock off any loose block or paint then lath over it.
