Advice On Mounting Steel Angle Irons.
We have a renovation job on a hotel and we have to bolt angle irons to block for a brick ledge. I would like to hear some advice on how they would go about it. would you put anchors all the way through the block use some other kind of anchor and whats everyones advice on how to make it strong enough for lets say 20' ft of brick wall.
thanks, Turbomason |

I would bolt all the way through with either long bolts or threaded rod, at least 1/2 inch, w/lock washers, & some sort of wide flat stock on the inside

Same thing Brick said, go all the way through, I would use at least 5/8'' grade 8 with washers and lock washers, and a pesice of 1/8'' plate on the back side so that it will spread the load a little bit better.

Re: Advice On Mounting Steel Angle Irons.
Is this code that you have to bolt angle irons on?
Usually we are able to lay the lintels on top of the last course of brick highlights or the wall, whichever youre working around the window, and the lintel technically should not go any where. Of course I dont do much brick over block work. Im mostly new home construction.

Re: Advice On Mounting Steel Angle Irons.Quote:
You're talking about putting 20' of wall on top of these angles, which equates to over 600#/LF of load on the angle, and you're going to rely on what a bunch of people on an internet forum tell you? None of us know the thickness of the existing block wall, what loads are already on it, whether it's fully grouted, etc., so how can anyone give you an accurate assessment of whether the wall can even accept this additional load??? I hope you take my advice and consult someone familiar with the job and with engineering in general. Bob |

I agree with Bob"s advice- Get a structural engineer involved in the design, or at least have one sign off on your plan. Put's the liability on someone else.
By the way, Stainless steel bolts probably need to be used in a masonry wall. JVC |

Re: Advice On Mounting Steel Angle Irons.
You definitely need an engineer, and the first thing he is going to tell you is that you will not be stacking 20' of brick on a bolted on shelf. You will have at least 1, probably 2 relieving angles on the wall.

Re: Advice On Mounting Steel Angle Irons.
Take the advice of somebody you can place blame on when it fails. If you have no responsibilty in it, the blocks are grouted, and it has to be bolted I would use some 4" or 6" wedge anchors.
How wide is the opening you are spanning? I am / have done many buildings with narrow openings using only loose lintels, not bolted or welded to anything. By saying narrow I mean 4 feet or less, door width. I believe that the brick would support itself without the angle once it cures. |

Re: Advice On Mounting Steel Angle Irons.
well naturally it will be checked by engineers before we build i was just asking to be better familiar with it before i have done it many time with concrete walls but never had to bolt angle irons to a 8" block wall since you normally can build brick off block or concrete brick ledge. But the advice of using plate steel on the inside of the wall seams like a good idea.
Thanks, everyone |

Re: Advice On Mounting Steel Angle Irons.
Obviously, you have to think about common sense issues. What is the height that the angles will be bolted? Is the wall tied into other walls, or free-standing? Are there any cores grouted? are there any bond beams running through? Is there duro-wall every second or third course? Obviously. you don't want to put all that extra weight on one side of a free standing standing wall. Someone has to give the ok for you to do it. It,s mostly common sense, not rocket science!

Re: Advice On Mounting Steel Angle Irons.
There are details on steel angle brick veneer ledge, with bolt specs and spacings, in the IBC.
