Adding A Brick Shelf

I recently added a stone addition to my house and it looks so good I would like to add more to the rest of the house. I used real stone and had a brick shelf to work off of. How do I add a shelf to the existing house, can I bolt a piece of angle iron to the foundation and work off that?

What kind of stone are you considering? Lightweight cultured stone or real stone? Cultured stone probably will not require any extra support.

If necessary, it is possible to provide the support for a real stone veneer. It will depend on what kind of foundation you have and how high your stone veneer will be.

Re: Adding A Brick Shelf

most of the times when i have had a job that required a brick ledge,we would dig a separate brick ledge by hand and pin it to the excisting foundation of the house.i wouldnt lag angle iron and expect it to hold up with the kind of weight you get from natural stone.
with precast stone no footing of any type is required.it is self supporting and is kept in place with metal lath attached to the house.
good luck

Re: Adding A Brick Shelf

You would have to dig down to the footing. Coming up, use 4" block until you get near grade and then switch to brick where it is exposed.

Strip off the siding where the brick will go and apply house wrap. You want an air gap between the wrap and the brick. Don't forget the wall ties to keep the brick next to the house wall.

Below grade, you should also use wall ties between the 4" block to the foundation.
