Re: HD Tools

For what it's worth why buy something that is worn out and used by every Tom, Dick and Harry between N.Y. and L.A. chances are what you save you will spend on repairs in before the first year is up.

Re: HD Tools

I've rented a tool or two from them...The tool(stump grinder) worked fine, and at first glance, looked fine. But, they told me that if I didn't bring it back spotless, they would be charging me $50.00 to clean it. That's fine, or I thought it was until I went to clean the machine, and noticed probably years of rock hard sludge built up from months of use. They probably never noticed it, but being as paranoid as I am, I decided I'd clean it. That took an hour, the stump grinding only took 10 minutes.....Other than that, the tool worked perfectly.

Re: HD Tools

I've rented smaller equipment from them (trencher, flooring nailer, etc.) , never had a problem. For bigger or more important stuff I go to a professional rental yard.

Too bad you're not closer to me....I have a Graco sprayer and a texture machine that I might be willing to sell. Both have been used only a couple of times. Decided that subbing out those jobs was less sweaty for me.

Re: HD Tools

I have several tools from the home depot rental department and have had very good luck with them. I guess that is like anything else it depends on the guys running the department and how good they kept up with the maintenance on the equipment.

A buddy of mine got that deal too... The bonus he bought it from an HD that gets very few customers. You could tell the thing had been used less than 30 times.

Buying a rental tool from HD reminds me of marrying an ex hooker who only worked the streets for a year or so.

I purchased a graco texture sprayer from HD and have had good luck with it. They cycle out their tools on a bi-yearly basis regardless of rental frequency. I bought from them because they are so picky about the usage.

Re: HD Tools

I bought a $1200.00 Vanmark brake from them for $600.00. It looked like it was never even used not a scratch on it. So far so good, but with a tool like that there aren't that many parts that wear out.

I bought a $600 Bostich flooring stapler for $350 from a store that had only been open for 2 months. I guess it was used maybe 3 times. I have since rebuilt it from my own use and abuse but it worked flawlessly for over a year.

Re: HD Tools

I was talking to the employees at the HD rental section. He explained that sometimes they sell tools/machines that don't make money for them because not enough people rent them.

On the other hand, once I rented a paslode finish nailer and had problems with it. Next thing I know it was up for sale...

So, it seems like tools that are for sale are either
- seldom used, or
- abused/defective.
