Very Old Threads

Is their any way that old threads could be automatically locked after a year or maybe two or what ever you think the time should be?

It seems to be an annoyance to many here when a member (mostly new members) answer a thread that was started back in 2005.

The one looking for carpenters in Hawaii seems to never die. I don't even think the OP is still there anymore!

Just a though.

The occasional (rare) gem that pops up
is probably worth the annoyance
of the "urgent" advice for a 4 year old
emergency.

Re: Very Old Threads

I don't think it is a big enugh issue. Really, per centage wise on all of the threads per day/week/month, how many really old ones pop up?

I may want to go back and rejuvenite an old one myself once in a while, now that I have learned that I did not know as much as I once thought.

When I first signed up, I went through the archives to find the topics that interested me and that is what got me addicted.

I think it gives a newbie a safe place to read lots of other comments before jumping in and taking the full splurge.

Re: Very Old Threads

How about a flash on the thread that signifies "Old Thread" or the like. Nathan could do it fairly easily I am sure.

I can hardly wait to hear from
that John Sutter guy.
He's looking for a carpenter
to build a mill for him.
Sounds like a golden opportunity!

Re: Very Old Threads

This actually isn't as easy as you would think. I'm looking for a solution now though to label a thread as old. I'll let you know if I find something.

Re: Very Old Threads

LOL, nice!

There is a way to auto close a forum that gets to a certain age but I really don't want to do that. I think bringing up old threads is valid sometimes. The question is how do you label a thread as old other than the obvious date that is already there.

Re: Very Old Threads

How about in the upper left hand corner you put the date of the post?

And then you have threads like The Music Game in Off Topic started in 2006.

Closing that thread would be a loss.
