Contractor Talk Needs Icon!

Hi everybody,

This site is such a great resource and provides a wealth of knowledge and experience.

I am kinda new here...(but I've been lurking for a while now...)

It strikes me every time I log on: There is no cute little icon in the address bar like nearly every other website in the Wide World.

I did some Googling and I guess they're called "fav-icons" or some such.
(I probably should have known that...)

Anyway, this is my first post and I want to contribute to this great site.
My suggestion is to make one of those lil' suckers!

I messed around with a free tool for making these "fav-icons" and I made a couple of attempts.
I will upload, if I can figure it out...

Basically, what I think the forum needs is the little yellow hard hat as an icon that shows up in the address bar and next to favorites/bookmarks.

I tried both firefox and IE and no dice...
I know I'm not the first to notice this missing, but I searched for a previous thread and found nothing...

Whatdya say? ?

I tried to whip one up that was the "Contractor Talk" "bubble" -but without the words "Contractor Talk"
-The yellow hard hat sitting in the white (with green outline) "speaking bubble".
I think this one would look better with the hard hat appearing larger and more centered in the bubble.

Those icons have to be pretty simple though since they end up pretty small on most people's screens.

Thanks for reading my suggestion.

Hmm, it used to have the little yellow hard hat there.
In fact, the hardhat is what I have on my desktop as a shortcut to here. Not sure when it quit showing up in the address bar.

Re: Contractor Talk Needs Icon!

I could swear I've seen it there before.

When I was messing around with the free fav-icon tool thing, there was a test mode to see the icon in action.
The little yellow hat showed up next to the address but was gone when I changed pages...
It looked so familiar and ..well, just right..y'know?

It's a small thing but I really think it "nices up" the address bar/bookmark.

thanks for taking an interest and replying.

I have to say I've noticed this too. As long as I can remember, it's been this way. Bookmarks too. No hardhat.

I use Opera, and it doesn't show up in that browser, but other sites do. It does show up when I switch to Explorer. It might have to be coded specially to show up in FireFox and Opera.

Re: Contractor Talk Needs Icon!

I am usually using FireFox (Firefox/2.0.0.11).

I tried IE (7) again and, after I refreshed the page, the yellow hat appeared.

But not so much for the FireFox.

Strange... it's been in place for a long time. Not sure why it stopped working in Firefox. I'll look into it.

Re: Contractor Talk Needs Icon!

I don't know much about html/coding for websites but I came across this "how-to" snippet:

After you've created a neat favicon, it's time to add it to your site. To do so, follow the below simple procedure:

...which can be found at this Source:
tools(dot)dynamicdrive(dot)com(slash)favicon
(I was unable to link b/c <15 posts...)
^sorry if that's not kosher! I want to give credit.

That last part about the IE "browser bug" and "may take a few days..." is a little sketchy...but,

Just trying to help.

Re: Contractor Talk Needs Icon!

Like mdshunk I use Opera (9.21 on Win2k and 9.25 on Vista) It shows on my personal tool bar, but not in the address window or tabs.

Firefox 1.5.0.12 shows it nowhere.

Nowhere on Internet Exploder 6 (win 2k)
But w/ Internet Exploder 7 (Vista) it shows in the address window and the tab

I am not surprised different browsers exhibit different displays

I fell on hardtimes and started smoking crack. I stole the contractor talk hard hat and sold it on ebay for 10 bucks for a hit. I promise after I close my first job of the year I will buy it back and put it on everyones favorites lists
