New To The Site And New To Contracting

Don't worry I'm not going to ask "how much should I charge" Even though I don't have a clue, just gonna figure it out. So a little background.... Been working for others building homes and commercial buildings for about 6 years tired of the terrible pay, ready to go out on my own. Just need to learn how to bid one right. just screwed myself on a drywall job (small) made about $20 for 2 days (live and learn) Kinda hard to compete in my area (rural ky) You can get a couple of Meth heads around here to put on vinyl siding for $30/sq. and they do a pretty damn good job. I'll go on food stamps before I go that low. Anyways I'll shut up. Great site. Looking forward to getting involved in some threads. Any advice other than don't do it?

Welcome to CT, mind putting your location in your profile?

As for advice, at minimum read the sticky threads in the buisness & marketing areas, then look through the rest of the threads. Once your mind is completly full & spinning, post any detailed questions you may have. Good luck

Welcome. Read any threads related to anything you do. You'll be amazed at always finding out there was an easier way found by someone else who had 'been there, done that'.

Hey, at least you made money on your 1st job. I lost money on my 1st job. I'm pretty sure I lost money on my 2nd job too.... maybe my 3rd...

lots of insurance money floating around Kentucky right now. I know in Owenboro between the windstorm in the fall and then the ice storm a few weeks ago there is some work there. You could drive through Owenboro and over half the houses had blue tarps on the roofs after the wind storm, I havent been back down there yet since the ice storm, but the remodels and roofing should be decent down there this summer.

It looks like there's more than one of us that have learned the hard way. My first job was a NIGHTMARE, simple job - horrible customers. I learned a lot from that one. A very eye opening experience.

Hope you enjoy the site and welcome!

Hello and welcome to CT.

I would look at your first job (and hopefully the rest to follow), not specifically from a dollar stand point, but from a learning and business maturing standpoint. Some of the best lessons and business practices come from past performances. It's not always what you make (dollars-wise) from a job, it's what you learn and build upon that is vital for future success. Good luck.
