New To Site

Hello all.
I am James "Jim' Lower from Columbus, Oh. Just starting out and interested in learning more. Most of my work experience is from side jobs for apartment complexes and minor rehab projects for friends and family. Most work is drywall (repair and hanging), painting (interior/exterior), siding install, some cabinet work. Just figured if I can do this stuff why not try to make a living at it. Appears to be a decent site that I found why surfing the web looking for some jobs.

This is a great place to learn some good construction and business skills. Unfortunately, you will probably catch a little bit of grief here for jumping into trying to make money in this line of work with what appears to be minimal experience. Do yourself and your customers a favor and take it slow. Stick to strictly cosmetic repairs until you have a firm grasp on anything that has to do with structural, electrical, or water. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Also, take the time to read previous threads about pricing...specifically the one titled "pricing, estimating, and success", before you ask about how much to charge for anything.

Welcome to the site.

Hello from Ca. Jim. Congradulations on your new venture. Hey Jim I've been working for Apt. complexes for 20 years now. I landed a 98 unit complex and do all there painting and maintenance. I started out slow and now I do it all. Garbage disposals, sinks, faucets, ceiling fans, shower enclosures etc. Its easy. I charge by the item. $50.00 for disposals. $75.00 for ceiling fans and so on. At first it takes an hour or so for each item. Now 15 min. or so. you do the math per hour. We do almost 6 figures a year now at the one complex. Its almost 30 years old an things are really starting to wear out. What a gold mine. Drop me a line if you have any questions I'd love to help.
Take care. Danthepainter. One Call Painting & Maintenance Co.
