New To The Forums, Hello.
Hello, My name is David and I'm 24 years of age. I am probably one of the younger ones on the forum, but I respect and admire the construction industry and what you guys do for a living. I might not have the skills (yet) nor the logged hours in the books as most of you guys do, but I'm working on it trust me.
In addition, I've been a lurker for sometime now and decided it wouldn't hurt to join because you guys seem to be very helpful and informative. Currently, my ambitions are to one day run a contracting business that specializes in HVAC, Electric and General construction. I am a college graduate that obtains a Construction Management Degree, but after graduating and working behind a desk I figured it wasn't for me. So I decided to get into a trade. I figure living in the south Houston,Texas that HVAC would be a high demand trade, so I am currently attending trade school. Along the way I learned a lot and hope to pick up another trade after this which hopefully will qualify me to be a licensed Electrician/HVAC contractor one day. My history/skills: Been swinging hammers since I was 16, but didn't get serious until after college when I saw the potential earnings of owning a construction business rather than working for one. I know and learned that wanting to earn a lot of money comes stress, sacrifices, and emotional distress, but hey no sacrifice no glory right? Occupation: Currently I work in facilities operations as a building tech in health care and run a side business that rehabs investment properties. When I'm not doing that, on Sundays I am an A/C tech assistant at the horse track who pretty much does grunt work to learn a thing or two. A lot of older people ask me why the hell am I young and want work in maintenance for? I would smile and simply reply... Networking opportunities from the riches. Wrapping up: Like I mentioned I envy and admire the construction industry and respect this line of work. I'm not here to be some punk prick who is trying to give any one a hard time, I'm here to learn and hopefully grow my business one day. Thanks, David. |

Re: New To The Forums, Hello.
Hi David,
Welcome to the site. I know that all youth is full of dreams and ambitions. Nothing wrong with that. Just don't be all consumed with pursuing the goal of being a "Hot Shot" business owner, or a "big wig". None of the old timers on here consider themselves that, even the ones that own large companies and oversee multi-million dollar projects. They are all just honest, hardworking people, trying to deliver well-crafted work, professional services, and feed/house their loved ones. Any credit any of us get, any praise we receive, for what we do, is just a nice bonus, but it is not, nor does it define, who we really are....especially on the inside.

Re: New To The Forums, Hello.
Welcome and as stated before, just worry about paying the bills and putting some money away or investing in your business. My current speality came about by doing other work and finding there was great demand for it and no one to do the work. So, you're on the right track.....

Re: New To The Forums, Hello.
Thanks for kind words fellas,
AlanticWBConst: When I mentioned I wanted to be a "hot-shot" business one day I meant I want to construct a well trusted reputable honest company. I kinda learned that the bigger you get the more the quality of work takes a big hit. But who knows what the future holds. Cdat: I am trying my best to stash my pennies away. USP45: Any advice is certainly appreciated! Alwaysconfusd11: Glad you found something you're happy with, man if I found out all the things I learned now I would have went this route a long time ago. Keep up what your doing. |
