My Introduction
Hello fellow tradespersons!
My name is evident! I have found you in a general search some days ago, and lurked for a bit before deciding to join your group. I'm located in SW Michigan, it's somewhat slow work wise, although I've been doing this almost 20 years, so I have my contacts. Started in the trades by accident. I was a rather directionless kid, waiting tables, and decided I wanted to buy my own house at 24 years of age. Found one old abandoned shack on a decent piece of property and dug in.... Got hooked, had skills, and friends and family thought it might be a career. Hung out a shingle for "handyman", soon had much work, and entered the license and insurance program. (Which was rather lame and easy to achieve.) Back in those days, I'd dig a ditch if that's what came by, now...I'm much more selective. Met and "came up" under an old style builder who's son I knew through church. We did it all, from foundation to finish. Learned and got paid fair, learning worth more in the end. Stayed with him and his son until the fateful day I struck out on my own, but still do work with them on occasion. Still friends.... My position was a "by the hour" sub. So, now, I have a GC license, most of the credentials, and many hours of toil under my belt. I still like the work (used to love it), and make a living, but never got "big" or even really wanted to. Just enjoy being a craftsman, having some freedom, and making my way through life. Two kids, girls, one out of the house that made me a Grandpa, the other a senior in H.S. this year. Wife and I together for 20 years this October. If I had to be pigeon holed, I'd be called a carpenter, but I have a high level of skill (I wouldn't say master) in many aspects of construction. Used to frame and roof primary, now it's trim and finish. I got old, wore my back out to the point of lighter load capacties. Turned 46 this year..... Never been much of a "salesperson", don't care to kiss butt, but am generally an agreeable sort. Have been taken advantage of a few times, got thicker skin, learned too much the hard way.... So, that's about it for starters. In reading the site, I've seen some pretty amazing work from many of you. I will post pictures of some of mine when I have that ability. Thanks to all for your efforts in making a great place to hang out..... James |
