Installation Of Osb On Ceiling

Has anyone ever installed osb as a finished ceiling. if so, any pictures? I have questions concerning seams & fastening. Basically how to make it look good.

Please, no snickering on this one. It was not my idea, I just do what the customer asks and of course pays for.

I have a whole lake home ceiling to do by the way.

I went to look at a property for sale that needed rehab and it was just like that "Mountain builders home" except it was a 3 bedroom home in the city.
One good thing, all that formaldehyde out gassing would keep you looking young forever.

never did it on ceilings but we did gymnasium walls with it. The structural engineer called for 1/4 inch gapping between sheets, then we ran furring strips on all seams. We ran a larger horizontal strip w/ 2 bevels and ran a thinner furring strip into it on the verticals. It actually looked really nice, unfortunately I don't have any pictures.

Did this same engineer know anything about building codes or fire rated walls?

Yes he did, and my bad, it was not OSB but rather fire rated plywood, but the effect is essentialy the same as far as appearance.

Did you mention to the customer
that OSB will out gas formaldehyde
which is not healthy for plants,
pets, or people?
And that the only way to get farther
away from fire code would be to store
open tubs of gasoline in the living space?

Just curious, why is it ok to have the garage sheathed with it, if it is left exposed? Im just a sider, I KNOW it looks bad, but where does the danger come from

There may be some that is "treated"
like fire code plywood, I've never
looked into it.
Generally living spaces have to be
covered in noncombustibles.
Even if you put paneling on the
wall, there is drywall (or the like)
behind it.

That is considered paneling.
Most places it needs to be
applied over drywall.
(Places = jurisdictions)

How about suggesting some Plywood. I did a ceiling at a cottage a lil while back with 1/2" AC Plywood with 1 3/4" Lattice trim on the seams. A coat of paint and it looked pretty decent. I wouldn't use OSB, it will stink, look crappy, and I am sure there are some concerns about the chemicals in it.

Guys, and gals if your listening. There is a recognized finishing procedure provided by the APA. This is an upscale contemporary job. I've seen photos of it done in upscale townhomes in minneapolis, but it looked like they limited it to places where it was 4' or less in width so that seams were not an issue. Of course I'll have to drywall underneath for fire code.
