I'm New. HI. Shelving Question

Hello 2all:

I've been doing the Handyman gig in some fashion (on and off) for the past 10 years or so. I consider this past year 2b the most volume filled and committed so far. My services have included: Lawn Mowing, Trimming, Furniture Assembly, Interior/Exterior Painting, Hanging of Pictures, Mirrors, and Shelves, Cleaning and Organizing, Gutter Cleaning, and other stuff.

Last night I took on the job of installing 3 metal supports for shelving to drywall with wood stud. I think the support portion is 90% fine. I'm not worried about that.

The question:
The brackets are custom made out of 3/16 metal. There is a flat back that attaches to wall, to a circular piece, and a support for the shelves. There are two set screws on ea. circular piece (attaching them to the support for shelves and the back piece that attaches units to walls). One of the circular pieces had a set screw missing. I didn't understand the harm of this until the (glass) shelves were sitting on the brackets and I twisted this circular piece enough to comprehend the potential hazard. Do you advise taking the bracket back off of the wall and finding a matching set screw or is there a way to join the circular and backing piece to make them appropriately rigid again? A glue, resin, or chemical metal joining process that you know of? I managed a $50.00 extra profit from the job, but do not mind making this job right even if that extra goes away.

All said, I had 4 regrets (lessons learned) from this job and will post them if anyone desires. As you may imagine the explanations will be lengthy. I installed Sound Systems for over 6 years and still do not know many of the tricks I need 2know to do this sort of work fluently.

Get the proper screw and do it right, this also absolves you from any future responsibility. Take a screw with you as most of this stuff is from China and they are famous for mixing up metric and standard threads.

I'll suggest this correct fix to the home owner. She'll accept when I have explained that the hardest part is already done. Thanks 4 replies. These other ideas seemed more mess than fix.

Re: I'm New. HI. Shelving Question

I made the offer full-heartedly to make the proper repair to make the shelves as safe as possible. She didn't want the fix. I wonder legally if she could come after me if anything happened.

My argument would be: " I offered to fix it and she turned the offer down."

Get the screw before it screws you!

Re: I'm New. HI. Shelving Question

Yes I will make up a form stating that she has made the decision to release me from obligation to make the appropriate fix to that situation.

No I will not be getting the screw and doing the right thing.

Any suggestions on wording the document in such fashion which does not offend the lady and does it's job?

Ex...

On ______2006 I ________ was given the option to have repair (see repair description below) made to shelf for reasons of maximizing safety. I ___________ made the decision not to have said repair made and release _____________ from any liability which may result from this decision.

Home Owner___________ Witness______________

As a suggested corrective action in the future. I too have learned the hard way with missing or incorrect parts. Now, I always check the parts against the parts list; both for correct quantity and correct type. This way, in the event of a problem I can correct it before I invest any additional labor before discovering the problem. I also avoid unnecessary rework. To the person replying to your thread who wasn't sure what quality was: Quality to the consumer/user is "Fitness for Use". Quality to the manufacturer/supplier should be "100% Conformance to all Requirements."
