Start with your local chapter of the Small Business Administration.

Grant are hard to find, let alone get. You usually need a politician.

The Small Business Administration (SBA) is also a possiblity for low cost loans and possibly a grant depending on where you are and what you do. Be prepared to do some work and follow some accounting rules since the government does not give away money for a contractor to have a big edge over existing contractors. - They will make sure you learn and do things correct in case you get much bigger as you grow.
