Hi From South Africa
Glad I found this site as I'm busy with a site where I need to buil roof trusses. Im sure somewhere I will find very usefull info. Down here we only construct with concrete and bricks. Wood is only used for roof trusses, doors etc. Rooftiling is mostly concrete tiles or steel[industrial] Flooring would be tiles and carpeting with laminate flooring getting big now!
We have security issues here so the average househild will spend a lot of money on security fences, beams, security doors and lights. All gates are automated. Every second house has a electric fence. My construction team builds small shops and houses. Our building costs has soared and being in a economic vice grip, new development tend to be slow. |

hi and welcome. I know a man who came from Bosnia, he said all the houses there are built of concrete. Must be some bad neighbors!

Re: Hi From South Africa
Welcome to the forum!!
I was there about 10 years ago studying residential construction and meeting with the masonry groups and some block producers. The construction I saw was quite good, even the small, low cost single family homes. Is the use of solid and hollow 6" (150mm) blockstill common? I would imagine the supplies of good lumber for trusses could be difficult at times. I remember a block plant that also had a fried or grilled chicken restaurant on the site. Great place to see. - Especially the coasts. It is much more advanced and developed than most American believe and in some ways it is more progressive. Welcome again!!!

Re: Hi From South Africa
I've been there twice. My aunt lived in Johannesberg, near Santon City. We stayed with her for a week each time. I couldn't get used to the idea of the gates every time we drove in and out, locking the door to every room in the house every time you used it, the 8' high concrete walls with broken glass on top, the alarm system thet would call out an armed, private swat-team, or the fact that the city virtually shut down after dark.
Still, in the daytime it was a spectacularly beautiful country, and even 20 years ago, when I went, I saw plenty of successfull blacks. We were treated with utmost respect and hospitality evrywhere we went. Still, the one thing that struck me most about the population is that not once, ever, did I see a woman, black, white, yellow, red, or purple, out in public without being dressed to the t's. Nor did I see even a single ugly woman. For men it's a heaven! Welcome to the board. You'll enjoy it. |

Re: Hi From South Africa
Welcome to the forum. Disturbing to hear about all the security issues. You must have a high tolerance level for such things.
I have an old friend in Namibia and I'm too lazy to write him (post) and get his email address. How can I find his telephone number? He was last with Pan African Sales in Windhoek. I can't find any decent directory for Namibia. I wouldn't think it would be too difficult, since he is in Windhoek. |
