Hi From The NY Catskills
Just signed up and checking in to see what I can learn here.
I build Mission oak furniture and restore old Altec Lansing audio speakers. I also do general home repairs in the good weather, decks, replacment windows and small, one man type repairs. I get allot of calls from folks who know my oak furniture and need oak trim work repaired or replaced in their homes. I am a retired guy so I only take jobs that I feel like taking and work with folks I know are OK to deal with. Next week I will tackle an interior oak stair rail in a home that was a forclosure and half of it was torn out by the disgruntled previous owner. I found the info on spindle spacing I needed right here so I should be able to bring back what is now a complete mess. I look forward to reading and helping where I can. Gary |

Re: Hi From The NY Catskills
Yea, Went to Catskill game farm as a kid back in the early '60s, just above Kingston off the Tway. I am on the southern side of the mountains between Monticello and Port Jervis.
JBL and Altec are very near and dear to my heart. In todays market, you will have to spend many thousands to match the quality and performance of the late '60s - early '70s stuff. It says allot when a speaker made over 35 years ago is still sounding as good as the day it was made today. My speakers have gone from vinyl spinning turn tables and reel to reel and right thru 8 tracks, cassettes, CDs, Laser Discs, DVDs and now Ipods and never missed a beat. My system has changed a hundred times yet the speakers remain the same. Gary |

Re: Hi From The NY Catskills
Welcome, you just cant beat the look and durability of real wood. Especially Oak. Everything today is made of plastic or pressboard with fake grain and to me has no personality. The only reason why plastic will outlive wood is because it wont rot in the landfill.

Re: Hi From The NY Catskills
You do know that the ONLY reason that NYC has the best Pizza, Bagels and Baked Goods is the water...........Where does it come from???????
Todays Lesson: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catskill_Aqueduct I have climbed the face of this dam. Much to the protestation of my Mother and Local Officials!!!! (I was young) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ensico_dam.jpg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kensico_Reservoir

Re: Hi From The NY Catskills
The Neversink river is 2 miles down the road and the Deleware is 8 miles up the road from me. I have boats on the Roundout and Neversink resivoirs and fish them when ever I get some free time.
You won't want to get caught these days by homeland security messing around by any of the dams! They went and got all SERIOUS about them. I do agree with woodchuck and thats why I made all of my furniture from Oak. It will last my entire lifetime yet it will go back to mother earth when I am done and none of it has ever been to China, Maylasia or any of our other 1/2 A$$ trading partners. Gary |
