Hello..Inspiring Contractor Here
Hello everyone--
My name is Nick, I'm 18 and live in Orlando, Florida. I just discovered this site, (and glad i did!! haha) but my love for this industry has been upon me for quite some time now. My goal is to have my own business in this industry, either as a Building Contractor or General. Although, I am a novice and have a lack of direction, I am very ambitious and self-motivated to accomplish all I want to accomplish. I start my first day of college tomorrow at a local community college as an undecided major. I know many people who have made a great business through this industry without college. Not only am I introducing myself to the site, but I would love any type of feedback and advice. So a few questions I have are: Is college the best route for me? Is there a specific trade that I should get started in? Should I try and start as something small and work my way up? (Skipping college). Don't feel bad to criticize or anything, I am all ears and want to learn as much as I can. Thanks everyone!! |

school until you learn the difference between inspiring and aspiring. You are the latter of the two. You also don't really belong here. Perhaps you skipped over the part about the forum being for contractors and people in the trades.

i know im not a contractor and i clearly read that don't get me wrong but am i doing any harm..no. I'm just asking for advice and a sense of direction. There are some people that don't mind taking time out of their day to help and thats all I'm asking for. |

com'on... give the kid a break... sounds like he's a perfect candidate for the trades... he can't read and don't follow directions. he'll fit in perfectly
![]() Nick, I assume you're at Valencia CC. They have a Building Construction program, so there shouldn't be a problem of what to study. However, if you really want to join this club, get your fingernails dirty and grow some calluses on your hands and elsewhere. Check out Fl Tech and apprenticeships. Book learning does not a contractor make.

Hi and welcome to the site.
You have a lifetime ahead of you. Stay in School. Then pursue your goals in this industry. Consider pursuing a construction related or business management course in college. Many colleges are now offering courses and degrees in construction management. Good Luck!

Re: Hello..Inspiring Contractor Here
Yeah, I am going to Valencia and I will look into the Building Construction program.
My uncle who is a contractor told me to stay in school, take some construction mangement/business classes..so those were my intentions..just wanted to see what other people in this industry had to say. Hopefully, all will work out. |

Re: Hello..Inspiring Contractor Here
an education is a great thing, and if you put it off now, it will be harder to get back to it latter in life. I'ld suggest staying in school, and get a part-time job in the trades. Get the business education at school, and trades experience in the summer, maybe evenings and weekends if you can get on a crew part-time. find out which trades you like and if you really want to be in this industry.

Re: Hello..Inspiring Contractor Here
Nick I'll be third for
School/work Pursue school and get a company to give you a part time apprentice job so you are also getting hands on experience. When you graduate it will look good on your resume that you graduated WITH experience under your belt. Schooling debate: depends on what income bracket you want to get into. Do you want to be a local general contractor or do you want to get on staff on projects for Trump or Cappelli? The big real estate developers pay big money but they wont talk to you if you dont have a degree in construction science or engineering. Go for a four year degree . But if you want to be your own boss and feel the pain in your joints when you get older , then screw school and hang out with us and attend the school of hard knocks most of your life.

Although, in order to get my general, building, or residential contractors license..either a bachelors degree or 4 years of experience. Basically, I want to be the boss, but I want that as soon as I can. I know it's not that easy though (and if it is, let me know haha). My biggest fear would be failing..and although I don't know how competitive this industry actually is when it comes to bidding and getting jobs, I have a feeling I can do very well. Re: Hello..Inspiring Contractor Here
LESSON TWO:
You did not commit an error in spelling. You used an improper word. A somewhat understandable error. Inspire/Aspire. If you DO NOT continue your Education, your aspirations and inspirations will become expiration's. (Hot Air)

The most successful people fail more often than anyone else...they just don't let it stop them. DON'T let failure make you think you can't, use that to drive you to do it better the next time.

Welcome to CT
Good work and timely efforts will make you rich. Choose your customers wisely. Pops always said Doctors and Lawyers are the worst to work for. After 30 years and several large hits, I have to agree with him.
