Hello From Across The Big Pond!

My name is Steve Flashman and I've just joined Contractor Talk. It's great to be here from a wet and rainy United Kingdom! I am Business Development Manager of a medium sized contractor in London, England working in New Build, Design & Build, Refurbishment (Remodeling) and Maintenance - our project values range from £20,000 (UK pounds) to £12million - we build social housing, medical clinics, schools and care homes in London and the South East of England. I've been with the company 7 years.

Before that I ran a humanitarian aid charity building clinics, feeding centres, schools and vocational training units in 19 developing countries worldwide. We took 300 volunteers every year - some professionals in the construction industry and lot of manual labourers - who gave their time for 3 weeks of the year to do something worthwhile.

As a new business specialist in the construction industry, I am launching a new Marketing for Construction eBook on 10th September to support my colleagues who are struggling in this time of economic uncertainty in the industry.

It's great to be on board.

We worked on one in Donetsk. They weren't none too happy to see American's over that far east. We worked on an orphanage too. Wood? Unheard of or they steal it for firewood.

Re: Hello From Across The Big Pond!

Steve - Welcome aboard!!!

You will find the terms, methods and practices a little different if they come from the U.S. - We just do it differen than the rest of the developed world for residential, although the terms can usually be sorted out quite quickly.

Regarding Cdat's experience, I took a group of Belarusian and Russian (Moscow, Ufa, Siberia) designers/builders to see Michigan construction for about a week. We went to a beautiful model log home ($500,000+) overlooking Lake Huron. When we left, they tried to be polite, but could really not understand building a residential building out of "firewood".

The different terms and exposures are all helpful.
