Good Morning From Virginia Beach & Nationwide!

Hello,

Wonderful to meet you all. I am branching away from a commercial construction company I worked for for about 2 years to do subcontracting painting full-time. If anyone has any info on what I need to do to effectively insure, gain licensure, anything of that sort, I'd appreciate the advice. I have generated interest from several large developers and GCs already and have handshake jobs; I just need to cross my t's and dot my i's before I begin.

I'd appreciate any help you could offer!

Thanks a lot.

Warm Regards,

Brandi Monsma

Brandi,
Welcome to Contractor Talk and to the VAB "trades" community! Great place to start is to attend the Basic Contracting Course at TCC. Go to the TCC webpage and then into the Workforce Development section. One day course, Norfolk campus, will provide an appreciation for all the aspects of business and contracting in which you need to be conversant. Required if you are pursuing a Class A, B, or C license.

Welcome Brandi. The immediate things you have to do are get liablity insurance, WC insurance if you have employees, and get a good contract approved by your lawyer, and don't start a job without a contract

Re: Good Morning From Virginia Beach & Nationwide!

Hey guys,

Thanks for the help and advice! I will check out TCC's info and sign up for that course. That should be very, very helpful. I have perused the pages already and downloaded some of the forms and am using some of the tips I saw to write up a proposal for an approx 1000 sf loft/LR painting and trim job with minor drywall repairs. I was going to charge $2/sf. Does that sound appropriate or a little low? Obviously you haven't seen the job...

Thanks again! And hello to my Va Beach neighbors!
