First Week Of My New Life!

Hi all

Greetings from Toronto, Canada.

After 20 years in the corporate grind, I've gone out on my own and launched my contracting business...renovating kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and hopefully building decks over the summer. It's a one-man show for starters and we'll see how ot grows.

Just finished week 1 and I couldn't be happier (even though we were drywalling a ceiling)!! I'm living a dream I have had for a long time. Standing there in a cloud of drywall dust yesterday, arms tired from working overhead all day, I still couldn't get the smile off my face!!

Looking forward to being a part of this forum. There is an incredible amount of very helpful information on this site and it is great to see such a cooperative atmosphere in all the posts.

All the best
Graeme

PS - Oh yeah - I'm a drummer by night, hence the "rhythm-method" tag - any other failed rock stars out there?

Graeme,

Welcome aboard. Your story sounds familiar. I only lasted years in the corporate world. Was self employed before and will stay SE from now on. I know the feeling you had on day one. It is great!

Thanks for the kind words everyone! I'm based in Markham, in the northeast end of Toronto.

Cheers

Yup, 25 years of white collar for me. I do custom woodworking and light home repair/remodeling. I played drums for 16 years with 2 of them on-the-road.
This forum is a great place with a great bunch of folks. I learn a lot, advise where I can, and get some great laughs from the humor that goes on here.
Welcome! But just a warning...if you think all your headaches and long hours are behind you...think again!

Amen - but at least they are MY headaches!!

And now if my boss is a jerk I have no one to blame but myself!

I wouldn't call myself 'failed', but a realist.
Hey, I was only there for the chicks and the party.

The grass is always greener on the otherside, eh? Don't worry you learn to love to hate it over here too. I have been putting it down for 11 years and I am ready to get into less labor intensive line of this business the investing part. LOL
So when is DeveloperTalk.com coming on line?

Welcome to the club.

Re: First Week Of My New Life!

Hey rhythm-method
Great handle
I'm a drummer also and working musician
I've been playing around New England for years
My new CD was supposed to be released a year ago, but there's still art and distribution issues

Whatever...lol
So I keep myself busy playing in cover bands
I usually have a few going at any given time

What's your kit of choice?
Mines an old Pearl Export that's a little beat up, but has served me well
I also have a Tama I picked up used that one group loves the sound of, so I'll use that with them
It's cream with the vertical TAMA stickers on the shells
I call it my Joey Kramer 1990s Memorial Drum Kit lol

Anyway, welcome to the site!

Re: First Week Of My New Life!

Again, I have to say thanks to everyone for such a warm welcome. It is very cool to be a part of the "fraternity" now!!

It was also really interesting to see how many of you came from the corporate world. That is a whole other thread that would be interesting to pursue sometime...what is/was your day gig before you decided to trade the tie for the toolbelt?

To all you Ajax boys, hi again - I used to live at Westney and Highway 2 from 91-97 - our first home and lots of great memories there...and the place I first got the reno bug. Any of you ever eat at La Casa Verde? Still ranks as my favourite Italian restaurant.

Slick, I have to confess stealing the rhythm-method handle from my idol, Neil Peart (the title of one of his drum solos...like I needed to tell you that ; ) ). I also bash away at a similar Tama 9 piece set with the power toms, which my loving wife graced with a set of the Sabian Paragon cymbals for my 40th birthday last year (I think I'll have to keep her !!) My band is just a fun thing - our "bowling night" so to speak.

OK that's about as far off topic as I can get. Now can anyone tell me how to avoid getting the little pinholes when you are sanding drywall?

Cheers!
Graeme

Re: First Week Of My New Life!

rhythm, there is actually a thread about what you/we did before what we're doing now. It's in the Off Topic Area.

Westney & Hwy. 2 huh? I lived just north of there a few years ago. I'm in the new Bayly & Salem area now but moving to Whitby soon.

You know, we keep getting all these people from the GTA and we'll be holding Bob's Convention in Canada!
