Why not just go to a remote?

Re: Electric Fan With Light Connection

You need to supply a lot more information, what you want to do could be real simple or a pain in the ass. Your profile doesn't have your location so I don't know what you have and you didn't say. Is it romex or conduit, do you have a 1500 or 1900 box with a single that can be swapped for a double for the extra switch (assuming you're not putting the switch in a completely different location), or are you going to add a box?

If you have a 1900 with a single and conduit it's real simple. Put in a double, add a switch, get a hot/load (dark wire), un-switched, to one side of the switch, run the other up to the ceiling fan box (use the old wire to pull 3 new ones through), use the same neutral, separate the hot wires for the fan light and fan motor (sometimes you have to run an extra wire through the fan and do it inside the fan), wirenut the hot/load from 3-way to the light and the hot/load from the new switch to the fan. Done, moonwalk across the floor, collect your money and leave.

If it's romex, new line with ground, latter half of above.

If you don't know call an electrician.

Kind of sums it up beautifully, don't you think?
