Been Lurking...time To Act

I guess I'll learn all the details of posting, signatures, avatars, etc in due time, but I figured I'd jump in and see what happens. It is kind of humbling though to see my post #1 when many of you guys are close to 5000.

I'm Mike from Manassas, VA and my company is Homestead Renovations. Class A Contractor, myself and 2 project managers, many qualified subs, and a supporting wife. Working with architects, we do custom renovations from additions, whole house renovations, disaster recovery, and anything else I want to do that pays green folding money.

I have been doing this for a lot of years on and off and got legal in 2004. Still struggling, as I guess most all are, but most of all I enjoy what I do. Someone said once that if you do what you enjoy, you will never work a day in your life.

Another niche we work in is Client Rescues and Project Rescues. For Client rescues, we work with architects who have a client whose GC left them high and dry. We can go in and take over the project quickly and get it back on track. For Project Rescues, we work with both homeowners and architects who have a project that has gone bad. We work with independent inspectors who can assess the project for code and safety compliance, make all corrections necessary to allow it to pass inspection and bring the project to completion.

While we don't do a lot of this work, what we do is interesting and fun. I hope to gain some knowledge from the assembled masses here and impart my own brand of wisdom when appropriate.

Thanks for letting me in.

Welcome to the forum Mike!!
Here in the Charleston SC area, what i have been or was until my wife of 30 years paased away & I closed down whe learnt she was terminal to care for her.
Anyhow, moving on.
Since mid 90's onward to 2003 the majority of jobs was called Residential litagation here, (can;t remember if first heard it named that from the Engineer or Lawyer that asked me to take one). But typically already under litagation, name fit.. hahaha
Taking on these jobs I am sure you have seen how simple and straight fwd they 1st seemed and makes you scratch your head as to how they went south, (other than greedy, inexperienced hands). Some you wonder how they were allowed to go as far as did before being stopped.
But either way it does offer a great learning experience as well as perfecting all you already know & learn so much about construction, law, and people in general.
Finally, it offers a look to a side of construction most never would believe is a part of it all. At the end of the day, it is great money, great referrals, and reaching a point in career that offers comfort in security in our trade.
Sad it happens and there are no real winners as it is hard on all regardless of side one looks at.
Welcome to C/T again

Quick guess. Is this the secret handshake or is this the one?

One bows down, the other bows up. As for the secret password, I thought I wasn't allowed to know that until I have posted enough times to make myself a menace.

I'm never afraid to ask anything, I just may be afraid of the answer.

Welcome to the forum, Mike. Be sure to check out the Search function if you're looking for specific information. There's a lot of good info here already...looking forward to your contributions as well. Your first post was excellent - made in the right sub-forum, told us where you're from and what you're doing, perfect.

The Rescues end of things probably has you shaking your head a lot! You're a brave man to tackle someone else's screwups!

Best idea I've heard all week. Off to a good start, Mike.

All lot of folks (myself included) tend to run for the hills at the first mention of taking on a "problem job." I always assume it could have just as easily been the clients fault as it could have been the contractor. And you typically only get to hear the client's side of the story, right?

But I think taking a proactive, "Rescue" approach is a really great idea. To actually seek out and specialize in this type of work is ballsy, but potentially very lucrative.

Ultimately, you could become known as The Wolf for construction. (Like MALCO says he is.)
